China Says 60,000 Have Died of Covid Since Controls Were Lifted

Hospitals in China recorded roughly 60,000 Covid-related deaths since the government scrapped most of its zero-tolerance pandemic controls in early December, Chinese health authorities said in the first major accounting of the toll exacted by the Omicron wave currently spreading across the country.

China had been criticized by public health experts and epidemiologists—including some at the World Health Organization—for publishing data that routinely showed deaths in the single digits in recent weeks—figures they said grossly underestimated the impact the virus had on the Chinese population.

On Saturday, China’s National Health Commission said the country’s medical institutions registered 59,938 Covid-related deaths from Dec. 8, the day after zero-Covid measures were lifted, to Jan. 12. People over the age of 65 accounted for more than 90% of the deaths, it said.

Population is about 1.5 billion. Overall fatality rate is about .07%. That gives about 1 million fatalities if everyone gets infected once.

Call me skeptical. I think they are just trying to pressure the rest of the world into shutting down again. If you look at the worldwide Covid numbers. new cases and deaths are well below what they were during last summer’s peak towards the end of July.

I mean they seem to be on a crusade to kill their own people, have been for years.

How very odd. Looking at the years' long "official" data as found in "official" resources, one finds that as of today, 14 January...

It is interesting that so many "authoritative" voices from these last several years all disagree. As one data reporter is to be suspect, then so is another, and the Wall Street Journal is one of those that is suspect therefore, when paired with official sites used over these last years.

But then again, "authorities say." The Wall Street Journal's article is pay-walled. One may believe what one will, for such is this world of "news."

For my own view, this all comes down to plowing and sowing the field for more lockdowns for the ever "greater good."

Given the CDC's own source that about one percent of a population dies off each year "normally," 1.4 billion Chinese would expect about 140 MILLION to die each year.

Compare 140 million / 12 for a monthly estimate, and the number is over 11 million a month. Compare that "normal" with the Wall Street Journal's "authorities say" number of a far smaller "panic" number.

The funniest part of this news posted is the phrase, "China says." So they were liars before and are not now? Or the Wall Street Journal has some investment in the public perception of these lying yet trustworthy sources?

CCP has a problem either way. If 60,000 isn't much (and for China it's nothing), then the prior severe lockdowns were unjustifiable. If the real number is 600,000, then they should return to the lockdowns, which will lead to more unrest.
