Ban on gas stoves considered by U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission after new study draws connection to childhood asthma

A federal agency says a ban on gas stoves is on the table amid rising concern about harmful indoor air pollutants emitted by the appliances.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission plans to take action to address the pollution, which can cause health and respiratory problems.

“This is a hidden hazard,” Richard Trumka Jr., an agency commissioner, said in an interview. “Any option is on the table. Products that can’t be made safe can be banned.”

Natural gas stoves, which are used in about 40% of homes in the U.S., emit air pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and fine particulate matter at levels the EPA and World Health Organization have said are unsafe and linked to respiratory illness, cardiovascular problems, cancer, and other health conditions, according to reports by groups such as the Institute for Policy Integrity and the American Chemical Society. Consumer Reports, in October, urged consumers planning to buy a new range to consider going electric after tests conducted by the group found high levels of nitrogen oxide gases from gas stoves.

New peer-reviewed research published last month in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health found that more than 12% of current childhood asthma cases in the U.S. can be attributed to gas stove use.

“There is about 50 years of health studies showing that gas stoves are bad for our health, and the strongest evidence is on children and children’s asthma,” said Brady Seals, a manager in the carbon-free buildings program at the nonprofit clean energy group RMI and a co-author of the study. “By having a gas connection, we are polluting the insides of our homes.”

The Bethesda, Maryland-based Consumer Product Safety Commission, which has a staff of roughly 500, plans to open public comment on hazards posed by gas stoves

Yup. If they were serious they’d ban smoking. They make too much off smoking.

Another instance of an unelected group of bureaucrats illegally making massive decisions. But people just love to watch it happen. The reasons stated have nothing to do what they want to do here. This is pure evil.

propane is a ‘dirtier’ version of natl gas says my DH

If a natural gas stove has a pilot light there might be some contaminants released but only very old stoves have pilot lights

Yep!
The communists intend to cure asthma by freezing or starving the kids to death...

Combined with the horrendous death rates of abortion and child covid immunization, those who want to reduce the human impact on the planet are charging ahead full steam...

Remember, the same government that wants to ban gas stoves for the supposed link to asthma is also 100% behind abortion and giving your kid a shot that they don’t need with awful side effects that they won’t talk about.

No biggie, people will get propane hookup to their stoves. Propane works just as good as natural gas.

Where I live, everyone uses propane. No natural gas within hundreds of miles.

Electric stoves are the pits. It is ridiculous to take expensive electricity and make it short circuit so that you can cook with it. This shows no respect for electricity, which has such beneficial uses in the home. Such as for lighting, washing clothing and refrigeration. For kitchen appliances too.

Gas stoves are the most convenient. You want high or low flame. You get immediate response. With electric stoves, there is an annoying lag time. I suppose the new magnetic induction cooking stoves are quick response. But I don’t want to eat food cooked by magnetic induction action. Same as I rarely use my microwave oven.

Forced air gas furnaces and water heaters won't be far behind if this is allowed to stand.

Disagree. The difference between furnaces/water-heaters and cooking appliances is that the combustion products in the former are vented to the outside.

The solution to the "problem" to be to require new stoves and ovens to have ventilation hoods to the outside, so that the combustion products are NOT released into the living space.
