Former Republican Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska resigned Sunday as he prepares for his next position as president of the University of Florida, which he begins Feb. 6.

“thrilled to join Gator Nation in February — very excited about the work ahead,” he tweeted on Nov. 9 after the Florida Board of Governors confirmed him in a 16-1 vote. “Melissa and I have had the great honor of serving Nebraskans in the Senate these 8 yrs — I will finish out the upcoming lameduck session and resign in the first week of January.”

Sasse’s replacement will be named by Gov. Jim Pillen, though the rumored pick - former Gov. Pete Ricketts - isn't sitting well with some Republicans, according to AP.

Senator Ben Sasse (R-Nebraska) officially resigned at 12:00 Noon today. Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen will select his replacement.— Senate Periodicals (@SenatePPG) January 8, 2023

Pillen was elected in November in large part because of current Gov. Pete Ricketts ’ backing, and now he can return the favor by appointing him to the Senate, more than 15 years after Ricketts spent $12 million of his own money on a failed bid for the office.

Even as they acknowledge Ricketts is deeply conservative and qualified to replace outgoing Sen. Ben Sasse, some Republicans aren’t sure such an appointment would be a good idea.

“It looks bad. It smells bad. What it looks like is two rich guys using their money and power to grab a Senate seat,” said Jeremy Aspen, an Omaha Republican and former state party delegate. “This is how authoritarian countries operate, where a powerful few ride roughshod to get what they want. Things like this stay on voters’ minds.” (AP)

Sasse, who was one of seven Republicans to vote to convict former President Trump in his second impeachment trial, left the Senate two years into his second term. He is reportedly set to make an annual salary of $1 million as UF's president.

I graduated from UF. I hope he doesn’t go woke. UF has become far too woke already. I hope my fears are unfounded and that the university recovers.

“...though the rumored pick - former Gov. Pete Ricketts - isn’t sitting well with some Republicans, according to AP.”

Two things here:

1. The GOP isn’t going to like anyone as they know they need to do something but like a baby, they don’t know what they want, just that something is needed.

2. The AP lies like a rug.

Even though Sasse voted to convict Trump, I suspect the faculty lounge at Florida will do everything than can to run him out of town on a rail...

One Senate seat! Did he get his panties in a wad over 420 million Zuckerbucks stealing the presidential election by taking over local elections? The Zuckerbucks also influenced countless other Congressional elections.

Or does he get upset about Bankman-Fried funding election theft?

Don’t let the door hit you in the ass Sasse , on the way out. You saw the writing on the wall....and bailed like Liz Cheney.

Appoint Trump to the Senate. He is on his way to Rulo to buy a home!

I reside in Nebraska. Pete Ricketts was an outstanding governor. I hope he is is Sasse’s replacement. He’s way more fiscally conservative. Worked hard to lower taxes, got the taxes dropped on military retirement and worked to lower our insane property taxes.

My guess is that Sasse is sufficiently woke or else UF would’ve never hired him.

Wish that we didn't have to deal with RINOs, but, what would happen if we got rid of all the RINOs? Democrats owning the house of representatives forever, democrats owning the senate forever, and republicans being relegated to minority status forever everywhere.

Better to have RINOs than committed democrats who would destroy the country with nobody to stop them. We're stuck with RINOs, but, we can try to get better people to represent republicans.

All I can say is that while I do not agree with Sasse on a lot of things, he isn’t woke.

It is interesting how many politicians take new positions that are even more worthless than the ones they leave. Lib arts “profs” and university heads are not things that produce more worth in a lifetime than the efforts of a good plumber, truck driver, or electrician produce in a day.

I suppose he also has the top requirement to run as a Republican for statewide office in Pennsylvania: rich enough to bankroll his own campaign.
