Germany will supply Ukraine with armored personnel carriers and a Patriot missile battery, the government said Thursday.

The announcement came in a joint German-U.S. statement after Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke with U.S. President Joe Biden.

Germany's decision to supply Marder armored personnel carriers comes after France said it will soon hold talks with Ukraine to arrange for the delivery of armored combat vehicles. France's presidency said that will be the first time this type of Western-made wheeled tank destroyer will be given to the Ukrainian military.

So, the Germans who are still importing massive amounts of “fossil fuels” from Russia are going to be delivering armored troop carriers to Ukraine? Good thinking!!! That will save a lot of fuel compared to dropping them off in Moscow.

--- "Germany to send armored carriers, Patriot battery to Ukraine"

Consider that NATO nations have been delivering massive amounts of weapons and munitions for months now, and this "news" is somehow supposed to be new "news?"

Germany, when we were there and Ursula von der Leyen was the bumbling Defense Minister who oversaw NATO training with wooden guns because there were not enough weapons to go around, was plainly not well equipped, remains toothless and more so with this.

It is news. These are new types of equipment being sent. Ukraine has not received non-Soviet design IFV’s before.

Add this to the US release of Bradley IFV’s and the French of heavy armored cars.

Between these all this should significantly beef up Ukrainian ant-armor capability as all these types have built in ATGM’s, or a 105mm gun on the French vehicles.

And this makes two Patriot batteries, with the US already sending one. That’s a big help to area air defense and a supplement to the existing Ukrainian S300 systems, which are apparently running low on ammo. Its a considerable help vs the Russian “strategic bombing” campaign.

Between Germany, the US and France this week, this could (given the number of surplus vehicles the three countries have) total 400-500 anti-armor vehicles, which should put a serious damper on any Russian ideas of an offensive. Russia cannot achieve a breakthrough/breakout into a state of operational maneuver without tanks.

This remains to be seen. I doubt Ukraine is done with offensive operations, and I doubt that Russian logistics will improve in Crimea or in the “land bridge”.

Your two replies foretelling what will come are most interesting. I for one cannot foretell what the β€œnew” weapons and munitions deliveries will accomplish in the long term. What the eventual outcome of this war will be seems very unclear, but its impact is certainly wider than German or French deliveries of materiel. We watch realignment of much now, with energy and shipping and banking all in flux, and seeming geopolitical ramifications which don't seem controllable, especially by Biden's claim that "we must lead the liberal world order.".

As in the past, I still hold to the third stance not so often seen by the more enthusiastic voices on these "Ukraine/Russia" threads. Not my circus and not my clowns, though currently Uncle Sam is reaching deep into the pockets of a coming generation who will be said to be obligated to pay for today's military adventures.

Biden’s “victory” itself upended everything. The war in Ukraine is just one consequence of that, one aspect of things going to pot. That said, that war needs to be resolved favorably for everyones sake, else there is no chance to stop, or at least mitigate, the ongoing cascade of events.

As for military developments, these need to be understood within the military, tactical and operational context of the war. Sometimes these themselves drive greater things. I am fond of the “horseshoe nail” theory of history. Small things can create greater things.

Is there a possibility of mitigating other paths of the cascade of failure the US elite set off in 2020? I dont know. Things are falling apart in several directions.

Luckily this all is NOT just up to the US, its people and leadership. There are other players. In Europe the critical ones are the unlooked for minor powers, largely. Like Poland, most of Eastern Europe, and Ukraine, or the Ukrainians themselves. These people, at least, still know how to be men.

To steal bits of Auden, out of context,

Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
They stood, and the earth’s foundations stay;
What God abandoned, these defended ...

And so they shamed the reluctant giants to do their duty, or part of it.

In Asia we may all end up thanking the Japanese. And in the US Mr. Musk, say, may end up being a hero for the ages. In tje world there are a host of stories running at once, and you may not be hearing all of them in the US.

Thanks for the response. Your quote is from "Epitaph on an Army of Mercenaries" by A. E. Housman.

I think the title, from a time of one of the "great" wars, should not be ignored.

You observe, "there are a host of stories running at once, and you may not be hearing all of them in the US."

Indeed there are a host of competing stories, and one of these is the attempt to silence other stories. You note the failure of the US elite, and in this we wholly agree. In all the money games -- I link climate change, war materiel marketing, the pandemic "event," and more -- I tend to be skeptical of money as it floods about without scrutiny and 'oddly' ending up in the hands of the same elite.

My wife and I try to read broadly, being multilingual, and read competing posts across a range of views, as a way of minimizing confirmation bias. Best wishes.
