Russia President Vladimir Putin on Thursday allegedly called on Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu to order a ceasefire in Ukraine in observation of Orthodox Christmas.
"Given the appeal of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, I instruct the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation to introduce a ceasefire regime along the entire line of contact between the parties in Ukraine from 12:00 on January 6 to 24:00 on January 7," a statement from the Kremlin chief said according to Russian media outlet RIA.
According to Putin, the Russian Orthodox bishop called for a Christmas truce so that the "Orthodox people can attend services on Christmas Eve and on the day of the Nativity of Christ."

So call it a stunt, but Putin is wisely creating yet another juxtaposition between Russia and Ukraine and their NATO handlers.
I see little advantage to Ukraine to refuse this 24 hour cease fire.
Realistically, both side will claim significant violations of the cease fire by the other side.
Why can’t they observe Christmas everyday?

Why does the Eastern Church still use the Julian Calendar?
The calendar of Julius Caesar was pretty accurate for its day. The Julian year features a (simple) cycle of three years of 365 days and one of 366 days.
This makes the average year 365.25 days long. However, that’s slightly off. The Julian Calendar gains about one day per century. The difference between the Julian Calendar and the Sun started to become noticeable by the Middle Ages.
So, about 1500, Pope Gregory (western church) reformed the calendar. Most importantly, every 100 years is NOT a leap year, except every 1,000 years IS a leap year.
Well, the Eastern Church wasn’t going to be bullied by the demonic western church. Why, if you aligned the calendar with the Sun, who knows what else would happen? The Enlightenment! Women’s Rights! Nazis! Pretty soon, the people of Ukraine would think they could be an independent nation. likewise Finland and Poland.

However, the Orthodox New Calendar is a modified Julian Calendar. All Orthodox Christians celebrate Lent, Pascha, and Pentecost on the same (Julian) dates! But New Calendar Orthodox celebrate Christmas on the same day as the West!
