BOSTON (AP) — The Boston City Council voted Wednesday to form a task force to study how it can provide reparations for and other forms of atonement to Black Bostonians for the city’s role in slavery and its legacy of inequality.
The unanimous vote means Boston now joins a conversation about reparations that is happening across the country from Providence, Rhode Island to California.
Boston will be closely watched given its troubled racial history, including its role in supporting and financing slavery even after Massachusetts abolished the practice in 1780. Supporters of reparations cited its history of segregated housing as well as a political economy after Emancipation that reduced opportunities for Black Bostonians. The result of that, they said, is a a wide wealth gap between white and Black families that remains today.
“This ordinance is only the start of a long awaited yet necessary conversation,” City Councilor Julia Mejia said. “The City of Boston, like many areas around the United States, has profited from the labor of enslaved African Americans and has further disadvantaged them by barring them from participating in the same economic mobility opportunities as their white counterparts.”

They abolished slavery in MA before the Revolution was won (1783). The Constitution was ratified in 1787.
"Boston" didn't do anything at all. Some people -- long dead -- may have had money invested in enterprises in the cotton states. Whoopty-doo.
They should also convene a commission to have the Egyptians pay reparations to the jews

I was under the impression that Massachusetts fought for the Union.
How many Bostonians fought in the Union Army during the Civil War fighting, in part, to end slavery? Maybe their ancestors should get reperations.
I wonder if the study will investigate labor unions which did not admit POC into their membership or apprentice programs.
Will the commission study the policies of some craft union that only permitted male relatives of existing members (all white) to become members.
Perhaps, one of the most segregated places in the country.
Here, take your reparation Mr Black Guy, just don’t hang out on Comm Ave, Landsdowne St or in Beacon Hill.

Slaves were negroes - they weren’t African Americans. Why is the word negro so offensive to them?

How about reparations for descendants of Union soldiers who were wounded or killed while fighting in order to free the slaves?
