'Burn everything': Poland chokes on the smog of war

In search of cleaner country air a Polish family swapped the busy city streets of Krakow for this - the village of Olpiny, nestled in the Carpathian foothills.

The Tkacuks family made the leap back in 2018.

But now, with the war in Ukraine and the cutting off of Russian gas supplies, Julia Tkaczuk's quest to bring her three children up in a less polluted environment is proving harder than thought.

Local authorities have postponed a ban on the dirtiest stoves for heating, and last month air pollution in the village exceeded the norms by fourfold.

"There was just such a hope that the law would come in, then it would be an incentive. For the sake of decency, first those who can change their furnaces would do so, and then others would follow."

Poland has been one of the most polluted countries in Europe for years.

Poland's government has tried to clamp down on the burning of dirty fuels in homes.

But those efforts were hampered when in April Russian gas was cut off over a payment dispute.

With energy costs subsequently soaring, the ruling Law and Justice party dropped a two year ban on residents burning lignite and poor quality coal.

It also loosened restrictions on selling coal waste.

The government says the measures should be temporary - and their impact on air quality will be evaluated after the winter.

Burning lignite is about one step up from burning peat.

She’s so hot, the smoke coming out out of her ears should
be fined, ban or no ban.

Yeah, GloboHomoNazi Superiority is more important than anything else.

Freeze and starve in the dark for Zelensky and Biden's 10%.

Poles don’t give a crap. They’ll heat themselves burning old tires if it helps thwart the Russians.

“Yeah, GloboHomoNazi Superiority is more important than anything else.”

Well, next time you want to fight the “GloboHomoNazis” maybe don’t pick a country to lead the fight that everyone in Eastern Europe hates and would do literally anything to see them lose, in revenge for almost a century of oppression and slavery that they inflicted.

Sounds as there is a choice to be made. Although this propagandist seems to be crying about it.

Burn wood and live, or freeze to death but have clean air to breath.

NOT freezing to death TODAY is a bigger concern than possible lung problem years away.

I’m not an expert, but if I recall, more particles in the smoke mean less efficient burning. It’s worth looking for ways to burn fuel more efficiently so you can get the most out of it. Cleaner air would be a side-effect.

I was just in Warsaw. One of the more noticeable aromas on arriving in Poland in the winter is the smell of sulfur from burning coal. It's still used to heat many buildings and is, of course, the main source of electricity.

Polish coal-fired power plants also supply Germany's needs when its "green" power supplies fall short, as they often do.

I was first in the country in 1994: I thought there were snow flurries in Krakow at the time but they turned out to be falling coal ash. Scrubbers have been installed since.

Now its burning brown coal which is the major source of the air pollution - it takes a lot of that type of coal to heat anything.
