Schumer pledges to keep senators in Washington until rail deal is done

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Thursday he will keep senators working in Washington until they pass legislation to avoid a nationwide rail strike, which he warned could begin disrupting the nation’s supply chain as soon as next week.

“The Senate cannot leave until we get the job done and Democrats will keep working with Republicans to find a path forward that everyone can support,” he announced on the Senate floor.

The Democratic leader began the so-called Rule 14 process on Wednesday evening to put a House-passed bill to avert the rail strike on the Senate calendar.

The legislation passed the House earlier in the day 290-137 to impose a labor deal on freight rail carriers and workers that would keep the rail lines running ahead of Christmas. Seventy-nine House Republicans voted for the bill and eight Democrats voted against it.

Gee. So NOW they are interested in not “disrupting the supply chain”?

Wonder what changed.

I am wondering if the GOP slow rolls this rail strike thing, can the delay keep the Omnibus funding of Biden’s pet projects on the back burnner till the new Congress comes in?

And which enumerated power gives Congress the ability to force private sector employees to work under conditions they don't agree with ?

America has become a totalitarian state run by a kleptocracy, and I don't see how this can be fixed at the ballot box.

Average salary will go up to over a hundred grand.

That’ll in turn goose pensions.

And there’s a cap on health insurance co-pays and deductibles, possibly premiums, too.

Bet Anericans paying four to five figs annually for their health insurance, and who make a (bleep) of a lot less that 100K annually, would like to know who to (bleep) to get a similar deal...

Senate GOP has already bent over and spread ‘em for Schmuck, Turtle Boy and Choo Choo Joey . They won’t stop a damn thing.

Seriously, this is a slam dunk for the Dems and GOP will get the blame for everything that goes wrong as usual.

Maybe no rail “Strike” but bet a whole lot of “slow-downs” due to a variety of reasons will result from Legislation. Funny how equipment breaks out of no where.

They are using the commerce clause (an old favorite of theirs) and the emergency powers clause.

But there is NOTHING that can make a person work if he’s determined not to. Nothing.

Then with an impasse such as workers deciding not to work en masse, does the executive branch pull a Canada or Brazil option by freezing bank accounts of the refuseniks? Probably so. We are there.

The Republicans that voted for it I’m sure they are McCarthy supporters. The spineless ones that go along to get along.

The constitution gives congress the power to regulate interstate commerce. The railroad act of 1862 started this nonsense.

Freeze the bank accounts of railroad strikers?

There’s a recipe for an all-out bloody revolution.

The feds could tie the strikers to power poles and flay their backs with a cat-o-nine-tails.

That’ll teach ‘em.

Am I the only one who believes railroad workers are slaves to the federal government if they cannot withhold their labor?

Not that I would want to see this but they aren't slaves to anyone. They can quit and learn to code like everyone else.

how much taxpayer money will it take????

Labor/management negotiations are for the companies and unions to work out. All the government should guarantee is that it is a fair fight.
