Senate passes bill to protect same-sex and interracial marriage over GOP opposition

WASHINGTON — The Senate on Tuesday passed landmark legislation that would codify federal protection for marriages of same-sex and interracial couples, with Democrats securing enough votes to overcome opposition from most Republicans.

The Respect for Marriage Act was approved 61-36, with unanimous support from Democrats and 12 GOP votes after defeating a filibuster and rejecting three amendments offered by Republicans who oppose the bill.

The measure now returns to the House for a final vote before it can go to President Joe Biden, who is expected to sign it into law.

The Senate vote reflects the rapidly growing public support for legal same-sex marriage, which hit a new high of 71% in Gallup tracking polls in June, up from just 27% in 1996 when Gallup first began polling the issue.

"We're making a really positive difference in people's lives by creating the certainty that their ability to protect their families will be lasting," Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., the author of the bill and first openly gay lawmaker elected to the Senate, told NBC News.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said before the vote Tuesday that he was wearing the same tie he wore to the wedding of his daughter and her wife. "It's personal to me," he told reporters.

What's the point? It's been legal nationwide since 2015, and the whole reason for this legislation was because of Clarence Thomas's post-Dobbs comments. In the event the Supreme Court wanted to return gay marriage back to the states, this law would do zero to prevent that. It's completely meaningless, and all the D.C. politicians calling it "landmark" or whatever are knowingly full of crap.

Because of the TERRIBLE THREATS to interracial marriage in the United States, the US Senate simply HAD to act.

THankfully it was gutted out of it’s most serious flaws...number one problem was it left no room for religious liberty but I think Mike Lee got it included in the language. Also as I understand it is STILL up to the states as the feds can’t make state laws concerning marriage. It was severely weakened but of course it still inches us closer to the leftist position of anything goes.

It's been legal nationwide since 2015, and the whole reason for this legislation was because of Clarence Thomas's post-Dobbs comments.

The reason they needed this legislation is exactly because of white supremacist Republican fascists like Clarence Thomas.

He would rule against interracial marriage in a New York minute if such a case ever came before the Supreme Court.

Leftists always engage in the fallacy of category error.
Male/female marriage is normal and constructive.
Homo unions are destructive and abnormal.

This law would require states to honor all lawful marriages from other states, including those of same-sex couples. In that scenario a gay or lesbian couple residing in a state where same-sex marriage is banned could go to another state to get married, and upon their return their home state would be required under the Constitution’s Full Faith & Credit Act to recognize the marriage, even if it wasn’t legal under that state’s laws.

Word is this is so the IRS can ya k the tax exempt status of Christian churches.

They’ll go around as they did to cake bakers and ask them to participate and then sue those that refuse into oblivion.

The Republican party wants the votes of social conservatives. They just don’t want to represent them in congress.

Anyone who votes for a representative who despises their constituent is a useful idiot.
