NATO chief says ‘door is open’ to Ukraine

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg on Tuesday said the “door is open” to admitting Ukraine into the security alliance and that the country would one day be a member.

Stoltenberg reaffirmed the commitment to bringing Ukraine into the western alliance and said Russian President Vladimir Putin would also have to contend with Finland and Sweden soon joining NATO after both countries applied in the wake of Russia’s late February invasion of Ukraine.

“President Putin cannot deny sovereign nations to make their own sovereign decisions that are not a threat to Russia,” Stoltenberg said in comments ahead of a NATO foreign ministers meeting in Bucharest, Romania. “I think what he’s afraid of is democracy and freedom, and that’s the main challenge for him.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced he would apply for NATO membership in late September with the hope to fast-track the application process amid the ongoing war with Russia.

Sort of miss the days of the 18th century War of the Cabinets where wars were nonideological with clear intentions. Negotiations would start at the same time as violence. Thanks to the French Revolution one has total war and all or nothing mentality.

BRILLIANT IDEA. Lets put a NATO country directly on the Russian border. What could possibly go wrong?

“President Putin cannot deny sovereign nations to make their own sovereign decisions..."

Ukraine hasn't made a sovereign decision since the coup in 2014

Good. Bullies don't get the message until you punch back.

The failure of Russia to achieve victory in Ukraine after nine months puts it on notice that it would be wildly overmatched against NATO. Expanding NATO to the right countries expands the universe of places immune to aggression. That's a good thing.

This won’t happen. But no one will side with Russia until the Putin stain is removed.

Ukraine hasn’t been destroyed due to my country, not your shithole, arming and training them.
Expanding NATO onto Russia’s border will cause escalation.

Lol - Russia is fighting against the arsenal of the entire western world. The only thing Ukraine is contributing is its untrained citizens as cannon fodder.

Allowing Uke into NATO would be a bad idea. Once the current fighting stops and both sides are lefts with nothing but bow and arrows, then allow Ukraine in. Russia will be defending it pts border from China. Every day this war drags on, Russia becomes weaker and China bolder.

Did you think the NATO bombing of Libya was a good thing? NATO should be unwound starting with the exit of the USA.

Libya is still in a civil war. There were YouTube videos of open market slave auctions. We sure made the world better there…
