Short answer? People like being scared or overwhelmed once in a while. Some folks have a bigger appetite for that feeling than others. Back in the late 70’s I recall hearing about this new film series called ‘Face Of Death’. I heard about it, but wasn’t all that interested. Many others were.

In today’s era, we have another film called SAW.
Just that name alone, I knew it wasn’t for me. It’s very popular with some. Quentin Tarrantino movies too. Big time!

It can start with younger kids too.
I recall the fad of Cabbage Patch Kids was jokingly parodied
by a deck of playing cards called “Garbage Pail Kids”
That deck showed a lot of vulgar and gross distortions of diseased animals and cartoon characters.

I wasn’t asking why, I was just despairing over the fact that 13-year-olds seemed to be fully aware of who Jeffrey Dahmer was, and apparently were fully informed with what he had done and they only way they were even likely introduced to the subject was the Netflix series.

When I was a bit older than 13, a movie, Mondo Cane, was released. I remember seeing it, but I’m sure it was age-restricted at the time. The fact that you had to watch it in a movie theater meant that there was there was at least the semblance of a gatekeeper involved. Today’s kids don’t have to deal with that unless their parents are very diligent.
