Russian pullout from Ukraine's Kherson region is 'positive' move: Erdogan

Russia's decision to pull its forces back from the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson was "positive and important," Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said.

"Russia's decision regarding Kherson is positive, an important decision," told reporters in the capital Ankara on Thursday before leaving for a summit of Turkic countries in Uzbekistan.

Vowing to maintain dialogue with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, Erdogan's comments came after Moscow ordered its troops on Wednesday to withdraw from Kherson to the east bank of the Dnieper River.

"I don't know whether there will be Russian participation in the G20 or not. We'll have the opportunity to meet face-to-face there (with Putin). Otherwise, we'll continue to maintain telephone diplomacy with Russia," Erdogan said.

It’s amazing how Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan knows how to worm his way into all kinds of situations. Even keeping Finland and Sweden out of NATO. He is a major player, who has miserable resources at his command. And this loathsome dude manages to stay in power for decades.

He reminds me of Alexander Lukashenko, another Putin frenemy.

Turkey is going to be a big problem down the road, even when Erdogan leaves the scene.

Even keeping Finland and Sweden out of NATO

hasn't happened yet ... but all Finland and Sweden have to do is announce "we now support the UN resolution officially condemning the 1915 Armenian Genocide"

that'll get Turkey moving real quick

Finland and Sweden will just appease Turkey until they get the membership, then go ahead and denounce Turkey’s genocide anyway. Because once they are granted membership Turkey has no more power over them, so they’ll be free to reverse course and tell Turkey to stuff itself.

Maybe he is clearing the last of his troops from there so Putin doesn’t kill them all when he nukes the place.

Because Turkey’s leverage only works if they are willing to give Finland and Sweden something in exchange for what Turkey demands. If Finland and Sweden comply and Turkey then refuses to back them, then Finland and Sweden simply go back to doing what they want and Turkey gets nothing anyway. So Turkey’s only move is to use their leverage while they can and hope that it works.

Would you explain how a stupid resolution is going to affect Turkey in any meaningful way?

The Turks must think it will or they wouldn’t bother making a stink about it.

Turkey will leave NATO when they no longer find it useful, and will go rogue.
