Republican Ted Budd defeated Cheri Beasley on Tuesday in the race for an open Senate seat in North Carolina, disappointing Democrats who saw it as a key pickup opportunity.
Mr. Budd had received slightly more than 50% of the vote when NBC News and ABC News called the race for the Republican, who is a current House member. He will replace retiring Sen. Richard Burr, another Republican, in the upper chamber.
Ms. Beasley, a former chief justice of the state Supreme Court, had positioned herself as one of the “flippable five” alongside Democrats trying to swipe Senate seats from the GOP in Wisconsin, Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio.
The outcome will likely prompt soul-searching among national Democrats and raise questions about whether they should have devoted more resources to the Beasley campaign.
“Cheri works hard. She’s honest. And most importantly, she always puts the people first,” former President Barack Obama said in an endorsement. “This is going to be a close race, and we can’t afford to get it wrong.”
The race wasn’t as nasty as other contests around the country. It was a dead heat throughout the campaign, solidifying North Carolina’s role as an unpredictable purple state.
Mr. Budd began to pull away in the polls in recent weeks as part of a broader gain of GOP momentum across the country.
The Republican leaned heavily into the economic debate, saying Ms. Beasley would be a “rubber stamp” for Mr. Biden’s agenda and cause prices for everything from rent to groceries to rise again.
“Everything that Joe Biden has done is everything Cheri Beasley would. I think people are realizing here in North Carolina the policies they support just make life hard on us, and everything that I want to do makes life better for us,” Mr. Budd said late Monday

Good for you, Ted!!!!!!!!!!!!
We’ve also won the two seats on the North Carolina Supreme Court, giving us the 4-3 majority; we were at one seat two years ago and the radical leftists were able to take all sorts of negative actions against the conservative majority of voters in the State.
Great news!
Time to redraw the congressional districts in NC. That may be worth three or four seats right there.
Some good news! Finally!
Thank God! We’re not getting a lot of wins tonight... where’s the supposed ‘Red Wave’??
That's awesome! Congrats.
Praise God!!
God bless.
Excellent. I voted for Budd.
In news that’s almost as good, both Democrats up for re-election on the state supreme court LOST! We now have a Republican majority state supreme court which can immediately overturn several of the lunatic leftist decisions the Democrat state supreme court made.
We can now have real election integrity laws such as voter ID the voters in this state passed by referendum 4 years ago. We can now toss out their electoral map they drew and implement the one the state legislature drew up for the next election. Oh, and it looks like the Republicans have good shot at obtaining a supermajority in the state legislature - so they’ll be able to just stuff anything they want right down Democrat Governor Roy Cooper’s throat.
Outstanding.
Excellent news
Excellent!
Awesome.
Turned out to be a Big Red Fart.
Americans are dumb.
That’s honestly the best news for NC right there. I have always urged NC voters to pay attention to the supreme court. In 2020, a conservative family friend voted for Trump and Forrest and THAT’S ALL. Totally, and foolishly, ignored the supreme court.
““Cheri works hard. She’s honest”
You mean all of them are not honest and work hard? Apparently this is noteworthy for a democrat so he called it out.
Everyone is crowing about Florida, but I have to say I am happy with what we did here.
BTTT!
