U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan says Ukrainian efforts to join NATO should be taken up "at a different time," throwing cold water on the country's desire to join the international alliance and potentially easing Russian tensions as President Vladimir Putin has begun accelerating rhetoric of potential nuclear war.
Ukraine formally applied to join NATO as a military partner on Friday, coinciding with Putin's announcement that Russia would be formally annexing four occupied regions within Ukraine's borders. If accepted, NATO-aligned forces would formally be drawn into the war, pitting forces in the West against the Russian military and, potentially, escalating the conflict.
NATO's Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said earlier Friday that while it supports Ukraine's right to pursue an alliance with NATO, all 30 allies need to reach a consensus on membership.

Now just remove ourselves from NATO, and let Europe deal with their own problems.
Ukraine’s borders are now contested which supposedly would preclude them from joining NATO now anyway.
The only way NATO is going to accept Ukraine while a war with Russia is ongoing is if NATO makes a conscious decision to enter the war directly.
However there is a likelihood that when Ukraine pushes Russia out of all of it’s territories including Crimea, that NATO will immediately accept Ukraine.
Ukraine at that point is going to be a formidable fighting force and a true asset to NATO. They will be one of the top 10 militaries in the world. They were #22 when Russia ceased Crimea. Now they are probably around #15.
And having been defeated and pushed out, Russia will then be forced to choose between ceasing hostilities and starting a real war with NATO.
This will have the neo’s foaming at the mouth today. They were all ‘mad bros’ yesterday.
Looks like ukrain is finding Joe isn’t really their friend,, he’s Communist China’s freind.

Ukraine needs to win its war first and on favorable terms. A lot more fighting left to do for this to happen.
Ukraine should just cede it’s territories to Mother Russia and stop all this nonsense.
When Sullivan says it it’s real policy. Unlike when Biden says something.
