According to the survey, Russian is used at home by 43–46% of the population of the country (in other words a similar proportion to Ukrainian) and Russophones make a majority of the population in Eastern and Southern regions of Ukraine:[30]

Glorious Ukraine has outlawed political opposition. They have forbidden print journalist opposition. They have forbidden television or radio opposition. They have now outlawed the use of the Russian language. They have used artillery for years against civilians in the Donbas region whose culture and language are Russian. Zelensky has even publicly demanded those whose cultural ties (for generations) are Russian to leave their own homes and uproot their lives and leave Ukraine.
The tyrants in charge in Ukraine are not people who deserve ANY assistance of the United States of America. They do not believe in democracy.
On a bright side, those disowned by him are indeed leaving. And they take their land with them.

In Vyshhorod in the suburbs of Kyiv, around 12 women greet each other in the town hall where they have gathered on a Saturday morning. Dora and Roxanna fled Donbas in 2014 after the Donetsk and Luhansk regions were captured by pro-Russian militias armed and financed by Vladimir Putin’s government. Tatiana and Larissa are Russian and have lived in Ukraine for many years. And Olga, a Belorussian national, has lived in Kyiv since 2020.
All Russian speakers, they are here for the same reason: they want to improve their Ukrainian-language skills. Tatiana admitted finding the Ukrainian alphabet difficult. She has been coming to classes for three years and has made some progress. But “In everyday life, I still use Russian,” she said. Wearing a T-shirt in the colours of the Ukrainian flag, Roxanna said that Russian is her mother tongue. “I learned Ukrainian at school in Donetsk, but it’s not my language of choice. No one ever forced us to speak Ukrainian.”
Now public sentiment is further reducing the amount of Russian being spoken. A recent poll from the Ukrainian Institute found that, in 2022, only 16 percent of Ukrainians claimed Russian as their mother tongue compared with 40 percent in 2012. More than half of respondents (51 percent) said that they only spoke Ukrainian in their daily life while 33 percent said they used Ukrainian and Russian interchangeably.
Larissa was born in Russia but has lived in Ukraine for 40 years. “My children speak Ukrainian and it bothers me that I don’t speak it very well,” she said. “At the moment, I feel a little ashamed not to speak Ukrainian in Ukraine. I started taking classes after the invasion on February 24, and I regret not signing up earlier.”

Face it..... Learning any language other than your own is so much work that it makes absolutely no sense to be studying DEAD languages (like Ukrainian)...

No matter how you cut it...Ukraine is engaged in cleansing.
Until the mid 80s the Soviet Union “discouraged” the use of Ukrainian; all officialdom and most schooling was conducted in Russian. Funny how the Russians never bother to mention that when they talk about language suppression.
So the sheer fact that half of Russians in 2002-2004 (well, pretty much anybody from Ukraine who was in high school) would’ve used Russian formally AND informally on a daily basis says absolutely nothing about their loyalty to or affinity with Russia at all. It was the de-facto language of the Soviet Union.
I’ve got two Ukrainian refugees living with me and know about ten others living within a mile of me. Some are refugees, others have been here a few years. Ages range from 19 to 80. They’re all fluent in Russian. In fact the oldest ones only speak Russian.
Russian is convenient; Ukrainian is what they’d rather be speaking. And yes, that includes people from the Donbas who, if you’d asked them five years ago whose side they were on, would’ve probably said the separatists.
You might as well ask if English speaking Irish republicans whose default language (they were all taught at school) was English, if this means they’re now pro-English and anti-republican. It really is an absurd train of thought.
This law sounds plainly wrong. Yet Putin/Russia goes even further.
