[snip] He has since been out of the public eye, skipping a high-level military meeting and the annual United Nations assembly... Nearly 10,000 flights—almost two-thirds of those scheduled for the day—were called off on Saturday, the same day a key conference on national defense and military reform was convened in Beijing... Xi, who arrived back in China’s capital on Sept. 16... didn’t appear at the Beijing meeting but relayed instructions that the armed forces should focus on preparing for war. Similarly missing was Wei Fenghe, his handpicked Chinese military general currently serving as the country’s national defense minister... During the past week, six senior Chinese officials, including two former cabinet-level officials, were handed heavy sentences for corruption-related offenses, adding to a string of officials purged in Xi’s anti-graft campaign he launched after taking office in late 2012. Is this the tweet that started the rumor mill?

Lao Deng:

Xi Jinping is not allowed to participate in the reform meeting of the Military Commission
Anti-Xi general Li Qiaoming appeared in the first row
Song Ping, the elder of the kingmaker, helps Xi Jinping under Li Shang
Old Chen of the Xi faction broke the news that Xi plans to change the chairman system at the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China

https://twitter.com/laodeng89/status/1572768276467568641

with a link to YT that suggested that the 105 years old Song Ping is the driving force for reform (He forgot to say that Song Ping was against the Democracy movement in 1989, but perhaps Song has changed his mind nowadays?)

In the YT it was said that Li Qiaoming was present in a meeting despite that he was kicked out by Xi and that this shows that Xi has little control over the PLA. This part could have been the source of the rumors.

The remaining part of the YT is pseudo-predictions of the status and development of technology.

More likely he’s consolidating power and under heavy security. That would be my bet.

It appears people were also concerned that Putin was not seen after their meeting. Now it seems he was holed up in his luxury dasha, and perhaps hobnobbing with the head of Belarus trying to convince him to join the war. Perhaps Xi was doing something similar, and perhaps communing with Putin on secure communication lines away from public scrutiny. We will probably get signs in a few days or weeks. Interested to see what happens mid October at the Chinese CCP annual meeting to reafirm Xi, or not.

There are those in China who think Xi’s days are over, and that he should NOT get a third term.

A potentially interesting set of statements.

Perhaps Zhang Fei might tell us more about this, or have a good guess about what is actually going on.
What is YT? Is Song Ping really 105? Was he on the Long March with Mao?

Only real insiders are privy to what is happening. If there is a coup, there’s likely to be radio silence for a period on the events in question. For instance, Mao’s widow was his de facto heir. She was basically Queen Elizabeth I (unlike the powerless and unrelated Queen Elizabeth II) after his death - with the power to do anything she wanted. Her problem? Many of her underlings hated her. So when Hua Guofeng, the de jure (but powerless) heir got together with Deng Xiaoping to make himself chief, her underlings deserted her and went with Hua.

I read in a recent twitter thread that Madam Mao and her favorites were arrested on Oct 6, 1976. The news came out on Oct 21, 1976. If I had to venture a guess as to the reason for the gap in time, I’d say they were securing buy-ins from the various military and civil officials who might take the coup the wrong way. They were either being reassured by intermediaries they trusted or were related to or bought off, perhaps both. Because if a significant number were opposed to the coup and resisted with arms, the potential for all against all civil war over the succession was non-trivial. Not out of ideological principle, but a combo of fear of being purged/killed and hope re the possibilities that open up in times of turmoil.

The amusing coda? Deng Xiaoping launched a coup against Hua Guofeng while Hua was abroad showing what a great statesman he was. That’s how Hua and Madam Mao became footnotes, and Deng got to lord it over the Chinese empire for well over a decade.

If I remember my history, Madame Mao launched the Chinese youth against the traditions of China and the people who maintained them. Many scholars and treasures of history and culture were lost, purged, or destroyed. A tragic time for the history and culture of China.

Thank you for some interesting history, can you answer any of my 3 questions?

YT would presumably be Youtube. I don’t know anything about this particular personality. There’s a guy on Twitter who’s assembled quite a list of Civil War players. Maybe he’s one of them.

I just spent the past hour reading a lot of the 3 line entries at your link. I’m afraid to click the continuations of these entries. Already I don’t get enough sleep from following the Ukraine/Russia conflict. Oh Well. ;-)

The nice thing about those entries on the Chinese Civil War is you already know the overall ending - the only question is how they got there. Ukraine is just one long slog because it’s the usual probe, attract fire, locate his artillery, take them out, done over and over. Here’s a fascinating vignette about how a single mole with Chiang Kai-shek’s ear may have been responsible for his ultimate defeat - everything Chiang did was telegraphed to his Communist adversaries.
