Napoleon’s invasion of Russia went quite well for Napoleon. He defeated the Russian army and took Moscow and then he waited for the Czar to seek terms. Instead the Czar burned Moscow to the ground, killing G*d knows how many Russians but he did force Napoleon to make a terrible winter retreat. That Czar was one ruthless bastard.

"By the second winter, the boots had worn out... but the line still held. Even Comrade Lenin underestimated both the anguish of that 900-mile long front... as well our own cursed capacity for suffering. Half the men went into action without any arms... irregular rations... led by officers they didn't trust." - Yevgraf Zhivago

Losing 95% of your army and most of your power and influence is not what I would call “quite well”.
