Vladimir Putin’s Energy War With Europe Seems to Falter
Wall Street Journal ^ | September 18, 2022 | Stephen Fidler

Posted on 09/19/2022 5:55:02 AM PDT by Alter Kaker

Vladimir Putin’s economic campaign to force European governments to abandon support for Ukraine by sharply curbing their natural-gas supplies looks to be faltering as gas prices fall, Russian government finances deteriorate and the continent sets plans to ease the pressure on households and businesses.

Russia’s long-term success in the economic fight with Europe is seen as critical by both sides in deciding the outcome of the conflict in Ukraine. But signs that Mr. Putin’s economic strategy is struggling are coinciding with serious reverses on the battlefield as Ukrainian forces regain swaths of Russian-occupied territory and as the Russian president has been forced to acknowledge the concerns of the Chinese and Indian leaders about the invasion.

European governments say Mr. Putin’s gambit is to cut natural-gas supplies to inflict pain on European households and businesses so populations turn against current government policies of sanctions against Russia and support for Ukraine with weapons and financial aid.

Russia isn’t yet sure to lose this economic fight. But a growing consensus among officials, energy specialists and economists suggests that, although Russian actions will cause serious hardship in many places, Mr. Putin will likely fail and that Europe should ride out the winter without running out of gas. Once this winter is over, Mr. Putin’s sway over Europe’s energy supplies will have withered critically, they say.

LOL. The spins are just fantastic. Gas used to be $370 per thousand meter, then shot up to $3200 and finally “collapsed” to $2500.

And as a side note I don’t see Putin “depriving households” of gas even though the European leaders pledged to stop imports. He keeps pumping except through one pipeline which is out of commission because the equipment can’t be serviced due to sanctions.

While I realize most here consider the Western Media as Pure as the Wind-Driven Snow when it comes to Ukraine (but a bunch of liars on every other issue, starting with vaccines and Trump), here’s a thread that make help you guys better understand how you’re ALSO getting played on Ukraine:

” Baker should pay more than 300,000 euros ($300,000) for gas (4 month bill!)”

Falter? Energy prices are up 80% in Britain. Businesses are set to close in Germany. And, winter is still more than two months away.

The Biden regime's sanction war was idiotic idea. It's disgusting that anyone here would defend something that has contributed to the inflation rate.

Russian Derangement Syndrome, like Trump Derangement Syndrome, makes one a blithering idiot.

Russian corruption and influence is being kicked out of Europe. To be replaced by American energy as directed by President Trump in his second term. Too bad. So not sorry.

right on schedule, there you are with your Russian dis-information

like other Freepers here have posted before, the classic cause of inflation remains the same ... too much money chasing too few products

remember all those Government handouts 2 years ago? ... blame that

the sanctions could be lifted tomorrow and there would be no effect on inflation

we know you Russian shills are desperate to get the sanctions stopped, but your lies aren't selling here

Are you at all worried with Russia’s horrible manpower shortage that Putin will be forced to conscript his legion of keyboard commandos? Would hate to see you deployed to the Donbass!

Horrible manpower shortage? lol. Your post is like one you'd find at the Babylon Bee. The Russians have used 10% of the military in this war.

You're idiot if you believe the propaganda coming from the Biden regime and Deep State. Both lie about everything else, why would you trust them to give accurate information about the war?

Wrong -- you're the one spewing dis-information, BIDEN REGIME DIS-IMFORMATION.

How many times has the Biden regime and their British helpers been caught lying about this war? DAILY.

Putin was dead in May. He had blood, thyroid stomach cancer and Parkinson's.

There have been claims Russia was running out of ammunition and weapons since MARCH.

How many times are you going to make a fool of yourself and fall for the lies? Apparently, endlessly.

Real conservatives don't believe the Biden regime or Deep State. I don't believe you are one.

Russian corruption and influence is being kicked out of Europe.

And, the loss of Russian gas and resources is sending Europe toward economic ruin. It's inevitable in the winter.

But, the Europeans are showing Putin! Morons!

wrong, as usual

Europe will be fine this winter ... and Russia will lose billions because of their petty, childish gas shut-off

in the meantime, enjoy the sanctions!

"To the Last Man"!

What the Putinistas fail to recognize or accept is the mindset of the typical EU or NATO citizen: Not only has Putin committed the unthinkable to most Euros by wholesale attacking Ukraine and destroying entire cities, making him Satan personified... These average Euro people mostly do not fully accept that it is also their own mistakes and shortsightedness that are causing them considerable hardships and will cause more this winter. The green agenda, easy gas from Russia, not standing up to Putin sooner, almost non-existent / bad joke defense spending -- All of these and more come from Euro pols generally doing what most of the populace wanted. Euro pols need only reinforce the notion that the majority blame for economic or other distress lies with Putin / Russia, and, no matter how bad things get, that is where most of the resentment will lie. This on top of a population that has consistently backed (by 70% or more), greater military aid to Ukraine, as mass influxes of refugees and images of bombed out cities became a new norm.

Events and deft propaganda could erode the above, but that would take time, and Russia's propagandists and their willing tools are generally laughably ineffective. Moreover, they seem ignorant of why they convince so few. Engaging in farting contests on social media and forums certainly isn't going to get them there.

The bottom line is that the more pain inflicted on Euros, the more most will hate Russia and Putin. Putin of course can use his own version of this sort of thing in Russia, to bolster his support. However, top down propaganda structures are easier to damage, unless they go full bore, like North Korea.

No, I would prefer that Europe pay for its own wars and that our politicians would focus on Americans and America rather than their traitorous global government schemes.

So, General Winter will be a non-factor to either side.
