(AFP) — Ukraine on Thursday claimed a military breakthrough in its counter-offensive against Russian invaders as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, on a surprise visit to Kyiv, unveiled another $2.8 billion in military aid.
Ukraine said its forces made gains in the north, the south and the east, prying back land seized by Russia which had hoped for a swift victory when it attacked nearly seven months ago.

The strange thing around here on FR is that it’s always “looking very good for the Ukrainians” and has been since the war/conflict/SMO started........
I met Bill Gates in 1989, as it happens. He impressed me as a great salesman. I was tempted to go all in on Microsoft, but no, I stuck with boring balanced investments. So it goes.
From the same article Despite the challenges, Ihor said he is eager to return to the front line as soon as he heals. “My people are there. How can I leave them?” he said.
However bloody the fight, the Ukrainian soldiers said they saw no alternative.
“If we don’t stop them, they’re going to just rape and murder our people like they did everywhere else,” said Oleksandr’s roommate in the hospital, a 49-year-old conscripted soldier who asked to be called by his nickname, “Pinochet.”
Pinochet said his knee was shattered by shrapnel from a mortar that was fired after a drone spotted him in the counteroffensive. He said that while Ukrainian casualties are significant, the side that wages an offensive always loses more soldiers.
“There’s nothing we can do about it,” Pinochet said. “And we can still win.”
As the Ukrainian cannon-fodder unfortunately continues to pile up.
The difference over six months has been the nature of the “good”. At first its been just about the probability of national survival. The “good” has gradually changed. Now its about winning the war outright, without loss of territory.
The strange thing on FR since Feb is its always “Ukraine is finished, cauldrons smauldrons, its over, etc etc...”
Indeed.
Uh...that’s actually a Russian vehicle and a Russian soldier who came under Ukrainian fire while trying to cross a pontoon bridge across the Dnieper River. It’s not Ukrainian.
It appears the Russian bandits are going to retreat from Izyum and consolidate in occupied Luhansk. The bridge is gone so they’ll have to swim, though.
Gotta admit that it’s a pretty good plan!
Is there anything new out about a retreat from Izyum?
I havent seen it but this is a very fast moving situation.
The literal translation of the title from Indonesian to English is:
Ukrainian Troops Bombarded by Russian Air Strikes While Carrying Arms and Ammunition
Ukraine wins by not losing because sooner or later Russia will break. They’ve already broken in the early battles. Now Kharkiv and likely soon in Kherson. At that point the conscripts from occupied Ukraine will melt away in disgust and the Russian army will be exposed. Ukraine will continue applying pressure at places of its choosing and the entire Russian military expedition in Ukraine will collapse.
“Viewed differently and correctly, the American money is not expense but rather investment.”
That’s a good point. The F-35 costs $1.7 trillion. It exists only to counter Russia and China.
If $80 billion can remove one of those rivals from the table for the next few decades, that is money well spent.
Kherson was a failure
The new offensive further north we shall see
NATO advisors are running this and along with uke politicians calling shots
Uke commanders are not happy sacrificing pointless efforts with high casualty rates they can Ill afford
All the European problems you are going on about are of very long standing. This war has changed nothing for the worse.
Yep. It’s all about dragging this out. $$$$
The ones I feel for are the innocent people whose lives have been destroyed as they are being used as pawns.
Agreed, Allegra.
The “break though” was completely contrived to provide cover for more tax dollars being sent to Ukraine and laundered back to those profiting from this war.
Uke commanders are not happy sacrificing pointless efforts with high casualty rates they can Ill afford
Good point. The Ukrainians commanders must be terribly unhappy about liberating more areas of Ukraine in the last 3 days than Russian occupiers have managed to steal in the last 4 months.
