(AFP) — Ukraine on Thursday claimed a military breakthrough in its counter-offensive against Russian invaders as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, on a surprise visit to Kyiv, unveiled another $2.8 billion in military aid.
Ukraine said its forces made gains in the north, the south and the east, prying back land seized by Russia which had hoped for a swift victory when it attacked nearly seven months ago.

” If so, then there appears to have been a rather effective deception campaign put out about the focus on Kherson.”
If this is the case it would be one of the more legendary military operations:
* Talk for months about an assault on Kherson
* Russia moves 100,000 troops to that front
* Ukraine blows the bridges locking those troops in place
* Real push in the East with most of the Russian forces trapped on the other side of the country.
Shouldn’t you be out collecting wood for the winter Fritz?
“....but much more US aid and assistance will be needed.” (The unspoken words)
Let’s see what you have proved after this winter. I think you will have proved that Russia has more than enough weapons and soldiers to keep fighting. You will have proved that the US is spending 10 times more on weapons than Russia does. You will have given Russia examples of all modern US equipment. You will have stocked the international black market with US weapons. You will have destroyed Germany’s economy along with much of Europe. You will have split the world in two. With half the land mass and most of the people on the China, Russia India Africa axis. Where they don’t use the dollar. And have far more growth than our side of the world. And you will have proved that Europe is quickly dying from lack of energy combined with lack of population growth, lack of leadership, and an invasion of unskilled criminals from Africa and the middle east.
This is the first Ukrainian breakthrough in this war. Indeed, it is the first real breakthrough by anyone since Russia attempted a coup de main in the first two weeks.
It has led to the opportunity for operational maneuver, that is, to exploit breakthoughs to threaten enemy rear areas and achieve decisive results. In this case the Ukrainians have, or are close to, isolating a large part of the Russian military in Ukraine.
It is the same sort of thing, in proportional scale, as the American breakthrough at St. Lo in 1944 (Operation Cobra). It led to the Falaise pocket and Pattons breakout into the German rear.
Or, if you like, Ariel Sharons crossing of the Suez canal in 1973, which trapped the Egyptian 3rd Army.
This event is almost in that category at this point. It remains to be seen if the Ukrainians can go the last little bit, or whether the Russians can do anything to retreive the situation.
Very unlikely that there are that many Rusdian troops at Kherson. The accepted number seems to be 20-25,000. Still, that is a large number in the context of this war.
Russia’s garbage “army” is running like rabbits under Ukrainian guns as I type. And you think its going to get better for them in the snows of a Ukrainian winter? Not a chance. Russia has lost the shooting war and with help from Putin’s Soros EU partners will try to freeze this war ASAP.
LOL - the Zeepers seem to be more unhinged than usual lately.
It’s somewhat entertaining.
Shouldn’t you be surrendering Frenchie?
BlinkenIdiot’s visit was planned in advance, as was the PR stunt costly Ukrainian Kherson offensive(s).
If I could go back to 2020, I'd invest all my money in pharma companies and arms manufacturers.
“If I could go back to 2020, I’d invest all my money in pharma companies and arms manufacturers.”
No kidding. Or if I could go back to 1989 and buy all the Microsoft I could.
Liberated Ukrainian civilians greet Ukrainian soldiers with hugs and tears
I know who the real ‘garbage army’ is: The NATO trained Ukrainian one.
“We lost five people for every one they did,” said Ihor, a 30-year-old platoon commander...
Russia’s Orlan drones exposed Ukrainian positions from more than a kilometer above their heads, they said, an altitude that meant they never heard the buzz of the aircraft tracking their movements.
Russian tanks emerged from newly built cement fortifications to blast infantry with large-caliber artillery, the wounded Ukrainian soldiers said. The vehicles would then shrink back beneath the concrete shelters, shielded from mortar and rocket fire.
Counter-battery radar systems automatically detected and located Ukrainians who were targeting the Russians with projectiles, unleashing a barrage of artillery fire in response.
Russian hacking tools hijacked the drones of Ukrainian operators, who saw their aircraft drift away helplessly behind enemy lines.”

“all modern US equipment” is hardly the case.
Nearly everything supplied to the Ukrainians is standard US ground forces equipment that has been around 20-30 years, at least. Consider HARM, used in SEAD. That was used extensively in Iraq/Kuwait in 1991 and 2003, and the Israelis constantly for thirty years. You think the Russians don’t already know all there is to know about that? Javelin, Excalibur, HARM, Hellfire, Harpoon - same-same.
Not used at all are the US “crown jewels” of Air Force and Navy weapons. That stuff is of actual strategic significance.
All the European problems you are going on about are of very long standing. This war has changed nothing for the worse. And its about time the politics of that shifted anyway. I am feeling rather hopeful about Europe actually. The bien pensants have egg on their faces and are wriggling under the spotlight, and are trying to reverse course as discreetly as they can.
It can be argued that your viewpoint is erroneous
The American money in question is in error considered by neo isolationists to be unacceptable expense.
Viewed differently and correctly, the American money is not expense but rather investment. That is by investing money in the Ukraine war with Russia, America is making an investment for which there can and will be a large dividend.
That dividend is the destruction of the perpetual Russian enemy for some notable period of time.
And yet, and yet - Izyum.
We will see. The decisive battle may be shaping up, and so far its looking very good for the Ukrainians.
I ride my bike past many nice homes that have firewood piles.
