Churchill wasn’t universally respected, let us say, and that is an understatement. He was seen as an unprincipled opportunist, a money-grubber, a man of the cheap press, a screw-up, and etc. and etc.
I grant you that it takes some work to understand all that. You can start with Manchester’s biography (sadly did not the wartime volume III), that does an excellent job on his prewar career. Read that first - “The Last Lion” Vol I and II, William Manchester.
