Paris (AFP) – Scientists on Monday welcomed the passing of US President Joe Biden's "historic" climate bill while calling for other major emitters -- namely the European Union -- to follow suit and implement ambitious plans to slash emissions.
The bill, which would see an unprecedented $370 billion invested in cutting US emissions 40 percent by 2030, should provide a launchpad for green investment and kickstart a transition towards renewable energy in the world's largest emitter.
Simon Lewis, professor of global chance science at University College London, said the US bill showed how lawmakers can advance climate legislation while responding to voters' short-term concern over fuel price inflation.
"Part of that is a package tackling inflation. I think that shows the world how to get climate policy passed, by hitching it to things that really matter to ordinary people, to make sure it's part of an overarching package to make life better for people."
The independent Rhodium Group think tank said the "historic and important" bill -- officially the Inflation Reduction Act -- would reduce US emissions by at least 31 percent by 2040, compared with 2005 levels.
However it said that with favourable macroeconomic conditions including increasingly high fossil fuel prices and cheap renewables, a 44-percent emissions drop was possible.
"The cost of living is here partly because we didn't get out of fossil fuels early enough," said Lewis.
"This bill means is that the transition away from fossil fuels is about to speed up."

I’m a Scientist and I do not approve of this message.
It’s a hoax that humans can control the climate.
It’s all about controlling the humans.
As excited as a flock of six-year-olds who just heard the Good Humor Man drive into their neighborhood.
Nothing we do in our country will have any affect on climate change. Only China and India can fix that problem and they never will. Meanwhile we will be taxed in to oblivion.
The only transition these fake scientists are seeking to impose is a transition from a 1st world modern society to a depopulated country living in a 3rd world society.

Basically Obamster forced many power utilities to shut down a lot of coal plants and replace them with natural gas plants -- forcing us power consumers to pay a lot more in our bills. Then Brandon made drilling for oil and natural gas a lot harder to do and more costly -- thus limiting nat gas supply and raising both our natural gas bills and our power bills (because power costs are more than ever now joined at the hip with nat gas costs).
This bill creates a Methane Emissions Reduction Program to penalize methane emissions -- including natural gas plants that are being used specifically because Obama forced them to be used. If you're an electrical engineer for a power company, the government is like a drunk parent abusing you for doing exactly what the parent told you to do. All of those fees and transition costs are added to our power bills.
Not that power costs matter to us EV owners or anything. LOL
Of the Chinese they ask nothing, NOTHING.
