Indiana becomes 1st state to approve abortion ban post Roe

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana on Friday became the first state in the nation to approve abortion restrictions since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, as the Republican governor quickly signed a near-total ban on the procedure shortly after lawmakers approved it.

The ban, which takes effect Sept. 15, includes some exceptions. Abortions would be permitted in cases of rape and incest, before 10-weeks post-fertilization; to protect the life and physical health of the mother; and if a fetus is diagnosed with a lethal anomaly. Victims of rape and incest would not be required to sign a notarized affidavit attesting to an attack, as had once been proposed.

DOJ lawsuit in 3...2...1.

The DOJ bastards already sued our Idaho for this. So much for a “government of the people, by the people, for the people.” The GD government is suing the people who created the damn out-of-control beast.

I do not think that word (ban) means what you think it means....

Eli Lilly announced they’re going to look at shifting future work out of state.

So allowing abortion up to 10 weeks post fertilization is “total ban”??

The propaganda organs are truly disgusting!

Fascinating. They allow abortion for cases of rape, incest, life and physical health of the mother, lethal anomalies, and any reason at all up to 10 weeks.

And AP says that is a "near-total ban".

Which tells you in clear, plain English that the VAST MAJORITY of abortions are purely elective, and that a lot take place after 10 weeks.

Huh, what a surprise. NOT.

So much for a “government of the people, by the people, for the people.”

The citizens who voted for this did so when Roe v. Wade was the Law of the Land.

It waits to be seen if they continue to do so. I know people here don't want to hear it but Kansas was a shot across the bow. Ignore this at your peril.

Victor Davis Hanson has been saying that 90% of all abortions were being done in blue states! So it is really a non-issue if the red states restrict access to abortion as hardly any were being done there anyway.

The law does not permit abortion for any reason up to ten weeks. It recognizes an exception for rape or incest, but those exceptions are only applicable during the 1st 10 weeks of pregnancy.

Ah, I must have misunderstood. Thanks for the correction.

The Kansas situation involved a murky proposal with murky marketing.

I fault the pro-lifers who were too cowardly to simply say “we want to protect preborn babies” and then write something that would actually do so instead of hiding behind “value them both” rhetoric and fence straddling.

The writing is unclear.

Is it a ban from conception forward, but with R and I exceptions for the first ten weeks?

OR

Is it a ban only from ten weeks post-conception forward, with R and I exceptions still allowed after that?

All clarifications very welcome and very appreciated.

Twitter is melting down saying teens shouldn’t enroll in Notre Dame etc unless they “take a vow of celibacy.” As a mom of 4 young adults, I welcome less “hookup culture” and more committed relationships and birth control in college—and abstinence too; what a concept. And I’ve told my boys to never have sex with anyone they aren’t prepared to pay 25% of the salary in child support to for the next 18 years. Maybe women have less abortion choice in Indiana now but men never had the choice to opt out of child support. Things are evening out.

Fatherhood begins at conception.

A father’s natural right to protect his preborn baby daughters and sons begins then too.

Including his obligation so support them financially?

After reading it more carefully, and checking another source, you are correct...

“The bill bans abortion at zero weeks, with narrow exceptions for rape, incest, fatal fetal abnormalities, plus the life and health of the mother.”
