I was stationed in Mannheim, at Coleman barracks, back in “74” in the early “70s, and I can tell you, they love their Oktoberfests. Me and a buddy attended one in Bad Durheim.
I remember it like it was yesterday. We were in Durkheim for the festival, and there were huge tents with tables lined up end to end creating such long lines you had to walk a long way to get out of them. Hell, by the time you found an open place to sit your beer was gone.
So if one of us finished our beer, we would eye a guy who just got a fresh beer delivered by a bar maid, the other would tap the guy on the shoulder to ask a stupid question. While was busy talking to a friendly America, the other would swap an empty stein for his full stein. After the guy turned around to grab his beer he got an empty stein. By that time there was no way to know who took it, because there was so many people walking around with similar steins.
Me and Mike drank a lot of free beer that day. I wasn’t even 19 yet, and long before I became a Christian.
