Mitch McConnell thinks the 2024 Republican race is going to be crowded
CNN ^ | July 19, 2022 | Chris Cillizza

(snip)

At least part of Trump’s reported interest in getting in the race before the 2022 midterms are over is to stake his claim and dare anyone else to challenge him.

McConnell knows this – and is working to counteract it.

Whether any major candidates – DeSantis, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, former Vice President Mike Pence – ultimately jump in is, of course, outside of the control of both Trump and McConnell.

And whether anyone who does run can actually beat Trump is a question no one can answer right now.

The Point: McConnell clearly prefers someone other than Trump as the party’s nominee in 2024, so he’s doing what he can to encourage them to not be bullied by the former President from running.

“ Mitch wants the party back for the blue-blooders.”

Man, you are kind to those cretins.

They are the most corrupt human beings that have ever walked the Earth.

The House is not required by law or the Constitution to name a member of the House as the Speaker of the House. It can be any legal U.S. citizen.

Historically the majority party choose one of the own as Speaker.

Why? Becuase the Speaker together with their majority have a lot to say about what legislation and what investigations even make to the House floor for a vote, much less passed.

Imagine Trump as Speaker sheparding the MAGA legislative agenda and using his office to get back at Biden, Pelosi and Schiff with GOP House majority chosen investigations, even doing “prime time” shows of them as the Dims have done.

Just as political theater it would be amazing and could help the GOP looking ahead to 2024.

He let Desantis run for POTUS with his endorsment, and Desantis won and Trump remained Speaker, that would be doubly amazing, a real “twofer”.

Yes, being Speaker is a sort of “executive” job, like chief executive of the House.

I looked at the timing and it would appear he could appoint someone to finish out his term if he should become the VP under Pompeo. No I don’t think Trump will run.

The only thing Mitch fears is that Trump’s rhetoric will cost the GOP control of Congress.

Not as crowded as they thought. I’ve decided not to run. That’s official.

I like both DeSantis and Trump but decided yesterday that if it’s that choice in the primary for 2024 I will vote for Trump. And that’s solely because I know he will pardon every single January 6th political prisoner including and especially likely Steve Bannon. I’m not 100% sure DeSantis would do that.

If the GOP doesn’t take back Congress, it will have nothing to do with Trump and everything to do with demoralizing the GOP base with things like Gun Control caving.

Thanks Mitch.

You’re right. He will do that.

If he wins again, no re-election. That means he can do whatever he wants.

I guess he means there will be a lot of “crowds” at Trump rallies, crowded indeed.

Yes, 2024 will be crowded: President Trump and his 80 million voters.
