Thought problem:
Dwight Eisenhower announces to the press in 1944: “Sometime in June, we plan to launch a massive offensive on the coast of France to defeat the Nazis in Europe.”
Make sense?
How about this one? “Sometime around 1096, we plan to a launch a counterattack to reclaim the Holy Land.”
It’s not unreasonable when mounting a military campaign to announce your objective. Germany knew damned well the US & UK were attacking the coast of France; it only miscalculated where the attack would come from.
My fear is more like Operation Linebacker in Vietnam. How many billions did we manage to flush for the Military-Industrial folks before we had folks hanging on helicopters to leave there?
Liberating France was an Allied propaganda trope for years before June 1944. It was an obvious move.
And it was just as obvious to the Germans. Thats why they kept a large army there, and fortified its coasts.
