VA ‘patient advocate’ captured on video body-slamming Vietnam vet still has his job

Department of Veteran Affairs patient advocate who was recorded on a security camera assaulting a veteran patient still has his job.

Video of the encounter, released by WSB-TV, shows Phillip Webb, a 73-year-old Vietnam veteran, being choked, body-slammed, and thrown to the ground at the Department of Veterans Affairs Clinic at Fort McPherson. The assault took place on April 28, 2022.

Lawrence F. Gaillard Jr., a patient advocate at the clinic, was arrested that day and charged with felony assault.

In the video, Webb can be seen in a waiting room. After Gaillard points his finger in Webb’s face, he grabs Webb and throws him against a wall, choking him with both hands. He then throws Webb to the ground and repeatedly kicks him in the head before leaving the room.

The initial charging document from the U.S. Attorney’s office in the northern district of Georgia notes that Webb was initially treated by a doctor at the clinic who observed several injuries including a large hematoma over his right eyebrow and a contusion on his elbow. Webb was later hospitalized for three days with a “brain bleed,” according to WSB-TV.

The assault occurred after an elderly veteran knocked on the door to ask to use the restroom while he waited for his appointment.

"I've obtained by FOIA surveillance video of the brutal beating of elderly Vietnam vet by a VA employee at an Atlanta VA clinic. @2Investigates was 1st to report on the attack last month. The attacker, Lawrence Gaillard is still employed by VA. @wsbtv" at 6

What is it? Young black man assaults elder white man?
This fellow should not be around any vets.
I hope the pressure keeps on that hospital.

"Fire his ass now."

He should be prosecuted for elderly abuse and spend a couple decades in prison.

President Trump fixed the problem at the VA once. He can do it again.

For some reason, Biden can’t seem to get anything done.

73 year old was also black which is immaterial. No elderly should ever be attacked in this way. It wasunexpe red and stunk of an out of the blue ambush. The VA employee needs to meet up with someone armed and knowing the attack is coming.

< sarc > I don't see the problem. Obviously this was a case of self defense because the privileged oppressor was using oxygen that should've been reserved solely for the use of the oppressed classes. How dare he!!! < /sarc >

(Again, the above was facetious)

This kind of thing is common enough where I knew never to set foot inside a VA hospital or clinic unless I had absolutely no other choice and it was a matter of life or death.

I know a lot of people get good service from the VA, but too many get just the opposite. Therefore, the only way I won't steer clear of them is if it's my only choice in life.

No Trump didn't fix anything....

Biden is not going to fix anything....

Nobody is going to fix anything..

I get my care at the VA just been through eight weeks of latest radiation due to ao ...

The system doesn't change much from administration to administration..

In my experience there are lots of “patriots” claiming to support the Vets but they are nothing but spit in the wind...
every elected official is only in it for themselves and I scratch my head when I remember why folks don't get it..

Had his foot on the neck.

Yeah, I thought that sort of thing was a no-no.

Is it only a no-no for the police?

Is it only black people that can’t be done this way?

Sick and tired of this crud.

When I started getting healthcare with the VA I took some time to research patient reviews for various random VA facilities across the country.

Some reviews gushed praise. Some were very negative.

I then looked up reviews for civilian hospitals in the same area. My impression was the exact same thing was applied to those. The ratio of positive to negative reviews was about the same.

Looking deeper, the positive VA reviews talked about the sincere efforts of their docs/team. The negative reviews were . . . I’d say mostly family of someone who died, usually of cancer. They were angry about the outcome. Not dispassionate at all, which is to be expected. But the review is not useful then.

The civilian reviews read the same way.

My experience with VA so far is pretty positive. Shrug.

You are absolutely right. Vets need to learn that the patient advocate is there to protect the hospital and not the vet. Other departments in the hospital will “pay” the vet back for the visit in several ways. I had my own visit in April to a patient advocate, that’s how I know. A doctor in cardiology a couple of weeks after that just out of the blue said I never had stage 3 kidney disease. They obviously thought they had purged my records on having stage 3 kidney disease. I have a paper copy though. See how that works. They will go that far.

It took me 3 years (and using DAV) to get my medical records (that they said didn’t exist). But, I guess that is more on St. Louis than them.. :/

Not an elderly white.

This was a vicious black on black assault.

When I hear that the assailant kicked someone in the head while they were down, I know they were either black or a neo-nazi.

The VA Healthcare system is never going to be fixed. It’s a cushy job for lazy people to collect a nice government paycheck without having to work hard. Not all but the bigger the VA the more slackers.

I noticed that since covid there has been alot less traffic in my local VA. Less events, less activities, less overall traffic.

But still the same number of employees. In fact, I see several staffers i know being moved around and given “busy work” so they can collect a check.

Nobody gets fired. This story is proof.
