As hard as they tried, the media couldn’t touch him in 1972. Hell, he won in the biggest landslide up to that time: 520 EVs and 49 out of 50 states (only Massachusetts went for McGovern, who couldn’t even carry his own state!).
Then Nixon handed the media the gift in 1973, and it sank him in 1974.
