Chinese and Roman societies did very well for many centuries when duty to one’s parents was a primary virtue. Not perfectly, but reverence for ones ancestors was a good measure of the moral virtue of a man.
well then if you have children take care of them properly!! They were NOT put on Earth to fufill your dreams and do your scut work, either.
I loved my dad, but to my mother I was nothing but God’s punishment.
ITA! As far as I am concerned it goes right up there with respect and admiration. It has to be earned.
God keeps score. He has to because Righteousness demands it.
Obviously then, we’re not a healthy society.
There’s lots of other evidence that says the same.
Great article. Will be savored by classical conservatives primarily.
But, the majority of Millennials and younger, and also Boomers, will not. Too long. Language is archaic to them.
I think that this reminder of the wisdom of true conservatism is crucial. But, the language must be that of those who have forgotten or never knew about our historical wisdom.
yes, too many folks pop out kids without any idea of how to raise them. It’s work! So do your job.
I hate it when folks say “ thank God i have kids, i won’t have to go to a nursing home” Really, that’s why you had them? selfish and lazy, imho.
Children: Honor your father and mother.
Parents: Be Honorable.
You appear to be referring to something George Carlin expounded upon most emphatically, somewhat less than biblically, and certainly with no real abundance of catholicity.

While the Roman Empire, for example, was a pagan society, the citizens of responded recognizably to the natural law, indelibly written, as it were, by God himself, upon the heart of every man.
“The best thing a man can do for his children is to love their mother”. Paul Harvey.
Well put. Thanks.
The human culture of family is as old as Man/Humanity itself.
Mind you, the Leftist Marxist/Socialists/Fascists/etc. has/have spent generations destroying it.......
bump for later
That was the “pre nursing” home plan.
The last girl took care of mom and dad, and then got a bigger share of the money.
It was planned, talked about, and expected. The last girl would never marry but take care of her parents.
My great aunt caused a scandal when she eloped with a baseball player. Not because she eloped, that was not uncommon, but because “She abandoned her elderly mother!”
My great aunt was 11 of 12.
We also need to stop idealizing the past. There were things that were better, but childhood ended pretty early. Grandpa had to find his own way at age 12, and that was common. His parents did not, so to speak, raise him. They didn’t have time.
my oldest sister never married and never lived alone, always with my parents.
I actually felt sorry for my parents- couples need and deserve privacy.
Get an apartment near by- have your own life, and let them have one, too.
