In Tokyo, Biden says would be willing to use force to defend Taiwan

U.S. President Joe Biden said on Monday he would be willing to use force to defend Taiwan, in a series of critical comments about China he made in Tokyo that an aide said represented no change in U.S. policy on the self-ruled island.

Biden’s comment, made during his first visit to Japan since taking office, and as Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida looked on, appeared to be a departure from existing U.S. policy of so-called strategic ambiguity on Taiwan.

China considers the democratic island its territory, part of “one China”, and says it is the most sensitive and important issue in its ties with the United States.

When a reporter asked Biden during a joint news conference with the Japanese leader if the United States would defend Taiwan if it were attacked, the president answered: “Yes.”

“That’s the commitment we made,” he said.

If I was running Taiwan, I would be worried now.

Having said that, you can anticipate his handlers being on all the morning news shows backtracking on this statement.

Did SloJoe refer to the Japanese Prime Minister as Tojo?

No rational nation of earth would base any strategic decisions based upon what our mentally feeble “president” reads from his teleprompter.

It isn’t true that the U.S. gave Taiwan a guarantee to defend it from the P.R.C. Never happened.

Biden is so dumb.

Other than Biden being less effective in teleprompter reading than Obama, there is not much difference between Biden’s “red lines” and those of Obama. I don’t see Xi backing off from invading Taiwan if that is his plan. The Afghan debacle emboldened Putin, and the same man and his handlers are still in the White House.

When a reporter asked Biden during a joint news conference with the Japanese leader if the United States would defend Taiwan if it were attacked, the president answered: “Yes.” “That’s the commitment we made,” he said.

Who is the "we" referred to? What did "we" commit to do, when did "we" do it, and did the "we" who did it have any authority to do so?

The “fierce resistance” in Taiwan will be like the “fierce resistance” in Austria 1938.

Well.... One has to wonder just what the word Taiwan means to SloJo. Without several handlers by his side, a teleprompter, and a communication earpiece, SloJo just might think that the word Taiwan was the last calculator he used, or tried to use.

The “we” is Biden and his deceased son Beau who, by the way, was a decorated attorney in the Army Reserves and died of disease unrelated to his service which almost makes the Bidens a Gold Star family.

Looks like its here...certainly implicit and certainly a stated policy for as long as I can recall.

From NHK...

Kishida, Biden agree to strengthen alliance The leaders of Japan and the US have committed to boosting regional defense. Prime Minister Kishida Fumio met with President Joe Biden amid rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific.

Uh huh.

Talk about Kabuki theater...

No one started a war by letting it be known they would DEFEND an ally from attack.

I think some Freepers need to emigrate to China and Russia, where they will never be heard from again.

Thank God Biden made that statement. Just maybe he avoided the war that is building - from China.

We are wasting our treasure on a lost cause in Ukraine, how are we going to be able to support the defense of Taiwan?

Again, Biden’s plans backfire. If his idea was to wear down the Russians in Ukraine, he’s also weakened the US.

True. Which means that, in effect, Biden’s unambiguous statement continues our policy of “strategic ambiguity.”

It’s just that now it’s “unintentional strategic ambiguity.”
