With Plunging Enrollment, a ‘Seismic Hit’ to Public Schools
NYT ^ | 17 May 2022 | Shawn Hubler

In New York City, the nation’s largest school district has lost some 50,000 students over the past two years. In Michigan, enrollment remains more than 50,000 below prepandemic levels from big cities to the rural Upper Peninsula.

In the suburbs of Orange County, Calif., where families have moved for generations to be part of the public school system, enrollment slid for the second consecutive year; statewide, more than a quarter-million public school students have dropped from California’s rolls since 2019.

And since school funding is tied to enrollment, cities that have lost many students — including Denver, Albuquerque and Oakland — are now considering combining classrooms, laying off teachers or shutting down entire schools.

All together, America’s public schools have lost at least 1.2 million students since 2020, according to a recently published national survey. State enrollment figures show no sign of a rebound to the previous national levels any time soon.

“The teachers unions destroyed the public school system in states led by Democrats. That is the obvious conclusion from the single most important paragraph in this article: that public school enrollment did not decline in states like Florida that kept schools open. Europe never closed its schools for extended periods because there, teachers do believe in the importance of teaching.”

Good. The money for school districts is based in most states on attendance. Lets see what they deem to be fat that can be cut.

Keep grooming children and indoctrinating them into the ways of letter people and normal people take issue. Who would have thought? We simply have to stop the homo agenda. There is no need to be tolerant of evil deviance. Frankly, I’m surprised we haven’t heard of any fed-up father taking matters into hand.

Families in Minnesota—Michigan-—Illinois have been fleeing further south.

Friend lives in So Missouri.

She says that people open the gate-—and knock on door, offering to ‘buy house for cash’-—and most of these ‘targets’ do NOT have a sale sign outside.

I keep getting solicitations from some fools in Turlock, Calif to “BUY MY HOUSE”. Fairly aggressive. I live in rural N Nevada, high desert. This time I am sending their crap back with “G F Y & take my name off your lists.”

If this results in creating a critical mass of homeschooled kids then that would be great. In areas with lots of homeschoolers, the homeschoolers organize to supplant the teaching with sports, clubs, and other opportunities for socializing.

So the old canard that all homeschooled kids are nerdy introverts can be dispelled.

Districts need audits.

I’ll bet NYC has lost way more than that...

I have been receiving the same solicitations, though I'm getting tempted to hear what they have to say.

If they come within 10% of my target price, I'm gone. I've got my eyes on the city of Burleson, about 15 miles south of Fort Worth. It's the home of my favorite winery...lol.

Will need to convince my wife, but we can start fresh with $250K in the bank.

They attached funding to school attendance to enrollment during the baby boom; to ensure ever growing budgets. They will now change the funding spigot to something else; or just increase the cost per student.

Omg, what a SURPRISE!

The Left has NO knowledge of the phrase “UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES.”

Maybe those 1.2M kids have a chance as a result.

Public indoctrination.

Gotta hand it to the puppet-masters(as much as I loathe them and what they've done to the country)...they know how to "Plan the Work, then Work the Plan"

(so do other parasites)

Only question left is, whether the masses will continue to be led like sheep towards a cliff(by a small but powerful minority), or grow enough brain-cells to fight back at some point?

Likely scenario, unfortunately, is something like The Twilight Zone - "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street"...they'll get us to kill each other...then have the world to themselves.

Unfortunately for them, once there are no hosts left to feed off of...parasites tend to die off.

...evil needs food too...since they are such a small group, (parasite)cannibalism will only go so far.

My bud teaches business at USC.

He tells me those idiots from L.A. public schools are the dumbest he’s ever seen and it was obvious the union teachers just graduated them to increase their grad numbers for funding.

The clowns don’t even know how to use and differentiate between “loose” and “lose” in a sentence.

The fights and protests are already starting up.

I live in the Los Angeles area and the schools here have lost 50,000 students over the past two years - students the schools believe are not returning, ever.

The district wants to consolidate and close schools that are sitting with full staffs and 1/2 the student population. Makes sense to me as a (very reluctant) taxpayer. The teachers unions are stirring up the parents to demonstrate and protest - we’ve had one already and I suspect there will be many many more.

With as much money as the school system wastes on STUPID things, keeping underpopulated schools open is not one of them.

My uncle taught freshman math at a UC in California. He said students coming in don’t know basic fractions - and this is students who were accepted to a University of California.

” He said students coming in don’t know basic fractions -”

Worse than that. He mentioned simple arithmetic, they’re clueless. In order to weed out these idiots and not waste his time, he jacks up the difficulty in his tests and fails a lot. His rep there is that he’s an a-hole but it’s done with good intentions to cover up his real mission which is to fail the
public school morons.

I currently sub at a school where I taught for nearly 30 years. Small, one-school district in a semi rural area. No teachers’ union, no grooming and it shut down for something like six weeks during the height of Wuhan. Enrollment is down at least 25% over the last 10 years. Problem seems to be that 20-30 year-olds are just not having kids.

A younger woman who I taught/teach with who has two kids herself says none of her friends have kids and seem to prefer living life as ‘older teens’ spending the time and money on themselves as opposed to offspring.
