Teaching has been my passion for the past 12 years. I am proud to call myself an educator. For the first two years, I taught first grade. It prepared me to effectively teach kindergarten while also focusing on kids’ social and emotional development. I have enjoyed working in Florida schools over the past six years, as has my partner, Jeramiah, who is also an educator. However, recently there has been a major cause for concern.
I have been stricken with fear over how Florida’s new law limiting discussions of LGBTQ+ discussions in school will affect me as a person and a professional. As a kindergarten teacher who is gay and has pictures of himself and his partner in his classroom, I regularly answer questions from my students like: “Mr. Bernaert, who is that in those pictures?” “Is that your brother?” “What did you do over the weekend?” As contributing members of society, teachers shouldn’t have to feel like they need to go back into the closet or hide who they are as people.
If you have ever been around 5- and 6-year-olds, the number of questions asked in a single day can be relentless. Multiply it by 19, which is the number of students I have in my classroom, and it’s a never-ending cycle of question and answer. To be honest, I wouldn’t want it any other way. Curious minds are learning minds.
But, because of Florida’s new law, I’m afraid I could lose my job if I answer these questions honestly and have frank, open conversations with my students about the world around them. Can I talk about my partner with my students? What do I say when they ask, “What does ‘partner’ mean?” How do I respond when students ask me about another student who has two moms?

Good. He should keep his mouth shut to the kids regarding his perverse lifestyle.
A perfect opportunity to share with the kiddies the joys of anal intercourse!!!
I don’t remember ever seeing pictures of my teachers with their spouses in the classroom, sounds like this guy is trying to promote the discussion, classic grooming.
Your personal life is none of their business, just as their "identity" is none of yours. Stick to education not indoctrination!
You don’t, and shouldn’t be allowed to teach kindergarten Cory Bernaert. Go teach college students, most of them probably are not much more advanced than kindergarten anyway.
... should be "stricken with fear" ... FULL. STOP.
"We just want to be left alone!!!"
.. is turning out to be the greatest LIE of the past century.
Here’s an idea, teach. If it ever seems like a good idea to discuss your LGBTQWhatever lifestyle with little kids — it’s not. Shut your d@mn mouth.
Then, why does a gay teacher feel they have to announce it to the kids?
No. You don't.
And why do you have a picture of your mutual masturbation pervert in your class room anyway?
I can not remember even ONE of my teachers even having a picture of themselves up in their classroom.
I subscribe to the 80/20 rule. 80% of what you yield comes from 20% of your input. I figure maybe 20% of teachers are good people with good intentions and good work ethics. The other 80% are nut cases. Who the hell wants to spend an entire career hanging out with with 5-year olds? IMO, odds are if you do you’re mentally ill.
He is in education for the indoctrination.
Supporting the GROOMING of young children in school re: ANY sexuality is a winning political strategy for any upcoming election.
Exactly....planting the seed right there.
Inappropriate as hell
Homosexuals should never be allowed anywhere near children.
Children have to be protected from aberrant influences.
If so desperately distressed maybe he should seek another profession.
The fellow is maintaining that the bulk of the world, that sees his conduct as abhorrent and deviant, change their opinions because it makes his working with small impressionable children difficult, and perhaps opens him to misconduct charges.
Tough. If you chose a difficult life, you live with the consequences.
“I have been stricken with fear over how Florida’s new law limiting discussions of LGBTQ+ discussions in school will affect me as a person and a professional.”
It won’t unless you are not doing your actual job.
“As a kindergarten teacher who is gay and has pictures of himself and his partner in his classroom...”
There is no reason for this at all and is unprofessional. You are not being a professional.
— none of my teachers ever had pictures up of their families nor did they talk about private lives. That would have been weird. It was weird even to see a teacher outside class in real life.
Males shouldn’t teach kindergarten. 4th grade is the earliest there should be male teachers.
Children should not be subjected to whom the teacher is married to.
Teacher’s personal life should be completely independent from teaching duties.
