Back in the 80s in Utah there was a story about people camping near the national guard base. They found an M79 grenade round lying on the ground and decided to put in the campfire to see what would happen. After a bit there was an explosion. It was the propellant charge going off. As they walked to the fire the grenade itself cooked off and blew the crap out of them. No one died but they got shrapnel.
A few weeks later there’s a woman in my MIL’s kitchen talking about this. She was one of the fools who got blown up. Lol. She was all excited about the millions they were going to get suing the NG.
A few months later there was a trial and the verdict came in. The jury held the NG 2% responsible. Lol. The $ didn’t even cover the court costs. LOLOL. Morons.
Back in 68 I was in ITR; one of the trainees picked up a dud M-79 round and it blew off his right arm and half his head.
A couple of Marines in front and behind him caught a little shrapnel but nothing to serious.
Object lesson to all hands, “DO NOT MESS WITH EXPENDED DUD MUNITIONS”!
