“Everyone is expected to forget everything they have ever heard about Ukraine from more than a month ago.”

Not me. I knew that Ukraine has been trying to become more western and it was working hard to integrate into Europe. They’ve made a lot of progress towards joining the European Union and that process requires creating a nation of laws and not of dictators, an independent judiciary, enforcement of legal contracts, protection of minority rights, honest banking, etc.

And they were on path to joining the EU.

Putin won’t have that. He needs a failing Russia to parasitize the Ukrainians if Russia is to keep going.

Russia is the country that most needs to do the things needed for joining the EU even if they don’t join the EU. Russia will never truly develop a prosperous economy until the days of strongmen, dictators, and oligarchs are behind them.

Yes, Ukraine was corrupt under Zelensky. But it was far more corrupt under Yanukovych and at least things were improving.

It’s like in the USA when you live in a crappy Democrat city if you try to clean up your neighborhood some scumbag criminal can’t stand it and has to ruin your efforts.

In Europe that scumbag criminal is Putin.
