Went for a long weekend in the Summer about 15 years ago for a frequent flyer mileage run. Even back then, the little pocket park near Pike Place Market was full of urban outdoorsmen, and we were told not to walk back to our Puget Sound-facing Marriott after dark/dinner from a restaurant about a 15 or 20 minute walk away.
Seattle had bad areas (much worse now), but Detroit was the worst city I have ever been in. I had a tech conference that was held in Detroit one year, and I was scared to even walk out of the hotel. (Side note, I am from south Louisiana and been to New Orleans many times....not even close to Detroit).
