My great grandparents on both sides of my family also came from Ukraine in 1880.
Jews had to leave because they were treated very poorly at that time. I think if you check the history of where a lot of Jewish families came from it was called the area known as the pale of settlement.

For a Jew to be elected the President of Ukraine, that’s as if the Pope had become a Hindu, or an Untouchable had become a Maharajah. And then there’s the fact that the elected Mayor of Kiev is halachically Jewish.
