Jeltsin tried to take over Chechnya.
They attacked Grozny (capital of Chechnya) and were pinned down there.
Total disaster! They had to pull out and basically recognize Chechnya independence.
Unfortunately, Chechens could not rule themselves and eventually capitulated to Putin.
Now Putin is facing a lot larger and stronger enemy. They lost the element of surprise and their spec forces trying to take over Kyiv by selective attack and airport takeover were defeated (more-less).
Massive attack by untrained draftees amassing North of Kyiv will be bloodbath. The tanks are not well protected against attacks from the rear. Every house could host a sniper. Every ruined house is a great defensive position.
Yikes!!! Wouldn't that be a war crime?
