The writer thinks fascism is violent culmination of racism, so if you remove the Aryan racism ie, antisemitism of the Nazis, you make the early stages of fascism harder to recognize.
That’s Berlatsky’s stock in trade.
Racial purity certainly wasn’t a Fascist trope. Fascism in Italy wasn’t antisemitic, quite the opposite, many Jews were in its “brain trust”, precisely because it was opposed to the traditional Catholic-aristocratic power structure in much of traditional Italy, which excluded Jews. Mussolini’s inner circle had several Jews, including his very influential mistress Margherita Sarfatti. Race wasn’t in itself an obsession of the Fascists, race-mixing was not a big deal. Cf. the famous “Faccetta Nera” -

Imagine the Nazis singing about beautiful Abyssinians!
The Nazis were something else. Race WAS a big deal, and especially antisemitism was at the core of their ideology.
The Spanish fascists didn’t care about race at all, beyond the general casual racism of the time common to every European. The regime were fine with promoting Moroccan officers including one general at least, Mohammed Ben Mizzian. In all this they were at least as “modern” as the French at the time.
Berlatsky should be ashamed of himself for writing this. It is the worst set of smears I’ve seen in a while.

They are entitled to focus on that general aspect of fascism, if they so wish.
They erase the specific experience of Jewish people and the specific experience of racism as a trigger for genocidal violence.
"Erase" is the wrong word. Rather, they choose to focus on the general aspect of "state coercion."
Denying the racist roots of the Holocaust enables bad actors to try to appropriate Nazi imagery and Jewish suffering.
So "focussing on something else" -> "erasing" -> "denying." Very clever equivocation / "moving goalposts!"

I don’t think the author knows what Fascism is. The cooperation between corporations and government, the former doing the latter’s bidding, and acting as a de-facto arm of the government is part of it.

Mussolini is the true father of Fascism, and racial purity wasn’t on the top of his list. Hitler committed such vast atrocities that Fascism is only applied to him, but he modeled his government after Mussolini’s.
People need to read more.
