Rep. James Comer, a top House Oversight Committee member, demands to know Hunter Biden’s alleged role in the sale of a cobalt mine to Chinese firm Molybdenum in 2016.
The leading Republican on the House Oversight Committee is calling on the National Archives to release any information it has related to Hunter Biden’s alleged involvement in the sale of an African cobalt mine to a Chinese company in 2016.
In a letter to Archivist David Ferriero Wednesday, Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) requested any documents pertaining to the first son’s potential role in the transaction, arguing the sale posed a potential national security threat by undermining the United States’ capacity to invest in green energy. Cobalt is a key component in electric car batteries.
“The American people deserve answers regarding why the Obama Administration —whether at then-Vice President Biden’s behest or not — watched in silence as an American company transferred control of this precious asset to a Chinese conglomerate and why Hunter Biden was — yet again — involved in international matters on which he has no expertise,” Comer wrote.
The complex transaction was first reported by the Washington Free Beacon during the 2020 presidential campaign, and was spotlighted by the New York Times this past November. It resulted in private equity firm BHR Partners being cut in on the $3.8 billion transaction — which transferred 80 percent of the Tenke Fungurume mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo from Arizona-based mining company Freeport-McMoRan to Beijing-backed China Molybdenum.
Hunter Biden and two other Americans co-founded BHR with several Chinese partners, and the three Americans each controlled 10 percent of the firm at the time of the sale. However, the rest of the company is owned or controlled by Chinese-based investors, including the state-controlled Bank of China.
“The loss of African cobalt mines to the Chinese is a severe blow to the United States’ ability to invest in green technology and lead the world by example,” Comer wrote. “It is potentially a national security threat, and it was a loss orchestrated in no small part by the president’s son.”
“As a 10 percent owner of the firm that brokered a multi-billion-dollar deal, Hunter Biden no doubt made a profit from this massive transaction,” Comer went on. “Unfortunately, such profit has come at great expense to both the United States and the DRC. China has reportedly failed to fulfill its promises to the DRC and established less than adequate safety conditions for mine workers.”
Comer argued that the Obama administration should have intervened to block the sale, claiming that though it was “well aware how important cobalt was about to become to the global economy … it curiously did nothing to intervene in Hunter Biden’s Chinese-backed transaction to facilitate the sale of one of the world’s richest cobalt mines from an American company to a Chinese company.”

The lawmaker requested the Archives hand over any information pertaining to the deal by Feb. 2.
“In this latest episode, Hunter Biden appears to have profited in the short-term directly from America’s long-term loss,” Comer concluded. “While Hunter Biden might not care that his actions have been a boon to the Chinese and a detriment to the United States’ position of leadership on clean energy, Americans do.”
Hunter Biden’s attorney said in November that his client had divested his 10 percent stake in BHR Partners, but offered no further details on the identity of the buyer or the transaction terms.

Repub calling on the US Education Department to launch an investigation into the University of Pennsylvania’s Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement, citing concerns about accusations of undisclosed donations from Chinese sources..........“extreme concern” about potential foreign influence over American colleges and universities and the impact it could have on elections.
“The widespread threat of foreign influence in American universities is well-known to Congress. These threats are deeply worrisome on their own — and even more so when they risk impacting the integrity of America’s elections.”
A complaint filed with the Education Department by The National Legal and Policy Center, a conservative group, alleging that the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement, named after presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, failed to disclose millions in foreign donations, including some from anonymous donors.
The University of Pennsylvania has denied any wrongdoing, telling The Daily Pennsylvanian the accusations are “completely untrue.”
The Higher Education Act requires institutions to disclose gifts and donations from foreign sources valued at $250,0000 or more.
It is unclear whether the Department of Education has the name of the donor matching the number, but whether it does or not, the law requires the disclosure of donors’ names..
The Education Department launched investigations into two other Ivy League schools earlier this year — Harvard and Yale — following similar accusations that they failed to report billions of dollars in foreign funding.
There has been a spotlight on preventing foreign interference in elections, he believes it’s possible adversaries could be using the donations to U.S. institutions to influence American politics.
The possibility that China may be using ‘anonymous donations’ in order to impact presidential politics should alarm all Americans, regardless of political affiliation.

President Biden released tax forms on Monday showing that he and his wife, Jill Biden, earned just over $600,000 in 2020.
The Bidens paid an effective federal income tax rate of 25.9 percent after donating about 5 percent of their income to charity, the documents showed. Their total federal income tax bill was just over $157,000. For 2019, the Bidens had an adjusted gross income of $985,000 and paid federal income taxes of nearly $288,000.
Both the presidential and the vice-presidential households appear to fall safely in the top 1 percent of American income earners, based on statistics from the Internal Revenue Service. And both would face tax increases this year if Mr. Biden succeeds in pushing Congress to raise a variety of taxes on high earners, as he is proposing to help fund nearly $2 trillion in new spending and incentives meant to strengthen education, child care, paid leave and other social programs.
Much of the Bidens’ income came from pensions, including Mr. Biden’s government pension from his years as a senator and vice president. That disbursement will pause now that Mr. Biden has re-entered the government, White House officials say.
Jill Biden received nearly $300,000 in income — including income from business profits — from an S corporation controlled by the Bidens, which received money in 2020 from two publishing houses, Simon & Schuster and Flatiron.
An S corporation is a small business designation that allows business income, credits and deductions to pass through to shareholders.

The Clinton Administration notified Congress today that it had approved the export of technology to China to permit the launching of a communications satellite aboard a Chinese rocket next month.
President Clinton said in a letter to Congress that the transfer would not harm national security or significantly improve China’s military capability in space.

The National Legal and Policy Center has asked the U.S. Department of Education to investigate its findings that the BIDEN CENTER at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) has over the past several years accepted more than $22 million in anonymous China-originated donations and failed to properly disclose the contributions.
