Disgraced attorney Michael Avenatti heads to trial, accused of swindling Stormy Daniels

Michael Avenatti, the disgraced celebrity lawyer and fierce Donald Trump critic, is scheduled to go on trial Monday in Manhattan for allegedly swindling ex-porn star Stormy Daniels out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Avenatti is accused of fleecing Daniels – his former client – of about $300,000 in money she stood to collect for a 2018 advance on a book about her alleged affair with Trump.

He was so fierce he got himself sentenced to 30 months in the federal slammer, with his sentence commencing last July. That was for trying to extort $25 million from Nike.

In this case, Mr. Avenatti:

"In August of 2018, the [Avenatti] forged Daniels’ signature on a letter that instructed her literary agent to forward advance money into a bank account he controlled, federal prosecutors allege."

He then used Stormy's money to buy himself a private jet.

He's on the hook for a lot more than that. It's remarkable to look at the list of crimes he's accused of (see his Wikipedia page).

According to the U.S. Attorney for Los Angeles:

"money generated from one set of crimes was used to further other crimes, typically in the form of payments designed to string along victims." The purpose of his crimes was "to prevent Mr. Avenatti’s financial house of cards from collapsing."
