The Senate filibuster vote dooms much of Democrats’ agenda

A failed vote on filibuster reform guarantees little progress on voting rights — and many other policies.

The Senate on Wednesday voted 48-52 against changing the chamber’s filibuster rules, dooming much of Democrats’ agenda for the near term.

Democrats were ultimately split on the rules vote, with two opposing the change, and 48 in favor of it. Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) were the only Democrats who voted against the rules change, which would have made an exception to the 60-vote threshold many bills need to advance. No Republicans voted to support the reform.

Had it passed, the rules change would have enabled lawmakers to bring back a talking filibuster specifically for a voting rights bill that includes the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. This reform would have required senators to hold the floor and make speeches in order to maintain their opposition to the bill. It also would have allowed senators to pass the voting rights bill with a simple majority once debate on the measure had ended. For other legislation, filibuster rules would have stayed as is.

Because of Manchin and Sinema’s longstanding opposition to filibuster reforms, the outcome of the vote wasn’t surprising. It did reveal, however, just how much support filibuster reform has within the Democratic caucus, and highlighted a stark shift in the party’s position on the issue. As the vote indicated, opposition to filibuster reform is now limited to Manchin and Sinema, two of its most vocal critics...

Hats off to Sinema and Manchin ... My gut tells me Schumer did this to soften a possible primary challenge by AOC.

Biden says he has accomplished enormous things in his first year.
But, you know, he needs to get rid of the filibuster so that he can, uhhhhhhh, accomplish something.
And now that isn’t going to happen.
So, accomplishing more stuff in his second years is going to be ... hard.

Another theory I’ve heard is that the leftist scum leadership will throw as much sh!t against the wall between now and November, knowing it will fail, to fire up the radical leftist scum insane asylum escapees to a fever pitch, hoping to blunt gains of the human party over the Party of Satan.

So support for the filibuster is **bipartisan** !

Both parties support it!

Maybe, but now the Dems can run on “Republicans blocked voting rights for minorities.” That, Jan 6 and Trump Bad are all they have.

Will minorities reflexively react “those evil Republicans” or will they see it as it really is — the Unbeatable Democrats Forever Bill?

Dodged the first bullet. They’ve still got a magazine full, and plenty of reloads after that one runs dry.

“Hats off to Sinema and Manchin”

Agree, but also the 50 Republicans (including some very hard-core RINOs) who held firm against this.

But Sinema and Manchin took BIG-TIME arrows to try to save our country from tyranny, and deserve a phone call or two to thank them.

Why would they do that when they have Biden’s Magnificent Accomplishments upon which to run?

“to fire up the radical leftist scum insane asylum escapees to a fever pitch,”

It won’t stop there. They’re setting up to knock effective Republican candidates off the ballot right after they get Trump indicted.

Because “insurrection”.

2 Democrats?

So it’s a bipartisan decision.

Senate confirmation of Trump’s impeachment was biPartisan, but not enough so to be effective.

The Constitution needs to be Amended to make it necessary to get a 60% vote to pass legislation in both The House and The Senate.

Kamala left early because Schumer didn’t have the votes and her laughing was distracting.

Eliminating the filibuster helps conservatives. It makes eliminating the department of education and the federal reserve easier.

“Republicans blocked voting rights for minorities.”

Actually, they did. The minority being those ineligible to vote.

...Unfortunately, they'll find a way to vote anyway.

PRyno had plenty-o-time to fix things up, but didn’t.

We have plenty-o-laws.

Slowing down the increase would be a Good Thing.

If your goal is to shrink government, it seems almost impossible with a filibuster.

The surprising thing is that Manchin and Sinema were alone. So much for the “moderate” wing of the dimocrat party. Those who try to run for reelection as a moderate will get their payback!
