Republicans threaten to skip traditional general election debates

This may be the end of presidential debates as we have known them.

The Republican National Committee has informed the Commission on Presidential Debates, which has hosted presidential and vice presidential debates for general elections for over three decades, that it will change its rules to prohibit the party's nominees from participating in CPD debates.

WBUR is a nonprofit news organization and our coverage relies on your financial support. Please give today.

In a letter dated Thursday, RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel outlines many objections and accuses the CPD of stonewalling the RNC's requested changes to the process and of being biased. Her letter includes a number of suggestions for fixes.

"The RNC has shared our concerns with the CPD in good faith, carefully documenting why the party and its voters have lost faith in your organization, and we have proposed commonsense reforms that would restore trust in the debates process," McDaniel writes. "Unfortunately, neither the tone nor substance of your latest response inspires confidence that the CPD will meaningfully address the serious issues which the RNC has raised."

As a result, McDaniel writes, the RNC "will initiate the process of amending the Rules of the Republican Party at our upcoming Winter Meeting to prohibit future Republican nominees from participating in CPD-sponsored debates."

Some of the RNC’s complaints listed in its letter include:

holding the first debate after early voting had begun;

accusing the commission of “making unilateral changes to previously agreed-upon debate formats and conditions, in some cases without even notifying the candidates”;

“selecting a moderator who had once worked for the Democrat nominee, a glaring conflict of interest”;

the CPD’s failure “to maintain the organization’s strict nonpartisanship, with a majority of its Board Members publicly disparaging the Republican nominee.”

I wonder if it’s because they finally popped their heads out of their collective asses to finally see the light on they the debate commission is controller by liberals, or if it’s because they don’t want to answer questions on how they are going to fix this mess they helped to fnck up?

What Republicans should do, IMHO, is to have each and every candidate write a document that delineates what they believe, what they want to accomplish, how these things will affect their constituents, and how they plan to accomplish these things.

The left never wants to admit what they want to do, because it generally wouldn’t play well. Hold their feet to the fire.

Lincoln-Douglas would work. So would Oxford style. The debates help us get our point across as well as our ideas. The present format is unfair because we let them get away with it.

There’s more: Let Trump decide the format in ways he deems fair. They’ll say it isn’t so he can just walk away.

Last-there should be one debate where the one issue is racism. No browns, yellows, or queers. Just blacks. That would scare the rats but the whole country would be watching.

May as well since the GOP candidates not only debate the Democrats they have to debate the Marxist moderators as well.

Why not just say no, we’re not going to participate in your biased farce? The “debates” are a set up designed to put Republicans on the defensive. Nothing more.

Pull the plug on this nonsense.

This WBUR organization is a biased piece of crap. This article is a partisan distortion of the situation. Why post a story from this source?

Agree the GOP should no longer participate in the current debate format, which favors the Dems. But the WIBUR spin on it is garbage.

They’re just playing the base again. Republicans always start acting conservative when an election is coming up. Its a seasonal thing with them.

We do not have debates; we have joint news conferences. In true debates the parties address one another.

It’s about time. The journalists, at least those who are deemed acceptable by the commission are all leftists - even the ones that claim to be conservative. As they are and have been, the debates are nothing but another platform from which the media gets to trash the conservatives.

The presidential "debates" have been a joke since Kennedy-Nixon.

They are, first of all, not debates. They are scripted answer driven campaign platforms for both sides. They use the same old talking points we have heard throughout the campaign.

They are political beauty contests rather than substantial. Most pundits comment on what the candidate wore, which was taller, where they stood when talking, how they looked and how "presidential" they appeared to be.

They are theatric platforms for the moderators who can turn a simple yes/no question into a half-hour politically biased monologue disguised as a question.

They change very few minds but offer pollsters a post debate venue to ask a select group of participants whether they have changed their minds like it would matter to the rest of us.

They could have done something about it long ago, but they didn’t. Because they didn’t want to. And they still don’t want to.

Talk is all they got.
