HONG KONG — Under the cover of darkness early Thursday, authorities in Hong Kong tore down a public sculpture dedicated to the victims of the Tiananmen Square massacre, accelerating a campaign to erase the crackdown from public recollection and stamp out dissent in a city that until recently was one of Asia’s freest.

The 26-foot-tall artwork, known as the “Pillar of Shame,” had stood at the University of Hong Kong for nearly a quarter-century and honored the hundreds, if not thousands, of students and others killed on June 4, 1989, when the Chinese military crushed pro-democracy protests....

Been watching the end of civilization series. There is much to learn from history:

They started at 4am local time. Put up screens so no one could watch or record it. They also had security guards to keep onlookers far away. Then the university said they took it down because of “external legal advice” (mostly likely China’s).

Just another way of making HK look more like China.

Let’s go Carrie Lam!

They can tear down a statue but they can’t remove a memory. Weak, weak, weak that’s all that they have proved. Oh, and that they’re ashamed and scared. Truth lives on.

This has been done throughout history. It does work many times, and even it doesn’t, they will continue to do it.

Is not the only surviving statue of Lenin in Oregon?

No; there are still several Lenin statues scattered around Russia, and eighty left in Moscow alone as well as his mausoleum.

Can it be said that you can judge who’s in charge of a society by the history of the statues they tear down?

Maybe we should have a replica of it made and put it next to the UN.

Kind of reminds one of all of the morons taking down Confederate monuments here in our “tolerant” society.

Right next to a statue of Th. Jefferson which the "woke" mob here in the good ol' U.S. of A. has torn down.

honored the hundreds, if not thousands, of students and others

Tens of thousands. shot with armor piercing rounds, squashed under tracked vehicles, bulldozed into piles, set on fire, flushed down sewers with fire hoses, during 48 hours of continuous heavy weapons fire.

No, but that’s probably the only one still taken seriously. :)

Commies always tear down statues. Here in the US they do the same thing.

We have little to say about demolishing politically incorrect monuments.

These statues need to have empty plastic copies ready to go. Paint them like the original, put them in place, and fill them with sand, dirt, or concrete.

If Communist China or Communist Black Lives MatterTM tear down a statue, let dozens spring up in its place, especially in heavily traveled thoroughfares.

Imagine seeing a bronze painted plastic Minuteman statue of Kyle Rittenhouse on your local Post Office lawn tomorrow morning.
