My response to CVS:
Please be advised that I EXPLICITLY do NOT, repeat NOT, grant my permission for you to share my medical infromation with Microsoft or any other outside entity in direct violation of HIPPA. Please advise immediately if you intend to ignore the law and my wishes so that I may retain legal council in a timely fashion.

May I suggest that all y'all send them a similar message?

Putting their computers in Azure is NOT giving MS the data. At least technically.

“CVS is reportedly in the process of tuning over medical data to Microsoft.”
Where?

It likely only means it will be hosted there for CVS to use, not Microsoft.

Thanks for the heads up, but I’ve never used CVS and never had any desire to.
Now if Walgreen’s ever goes into an agreement with the devil, then you can bet I’ll be sending a letter to them, post haste.

Using Microsoft Azure in and of itself does not break HIPPA. There are MANY regulations and layers of protection that keep Microsoft from accessing the information directly. I work for another cloud company (NOT Microsoft or anyone else mentioned in this post), and even though I backup and restore VERY large amounts of data, I cannot see that data, VERY few of the employees can, and no one has access to all of it directly. By the way, I am NO fan of Microsoft, but they are no worse than the other very large players in the market (Amazon AWS and Google).
The best way to steal private medical information is still by having a mole in the government or hospital.

i’m sure CVS will provide a little known opt out option for high info people. the low info types will of course be screwed again, when so called “health” recommendations start popping up on their screens.

One of the reasons why I have NEVER ever had a prescription sent to or filled by CVS. I put them right behind Walgreens, primarily because of Walgreens’ idiocy in getting mixed up with Theranos...

If CVS if hiring Microsoft (buying cloud storage) to handle patient data, then that is NOT a violation of HIPAA - HIPAA allows for medical data to be shared with contracted companies as needed, as long as steps are still taken to protect the data from other parties.
