Nine U.S. House Democrats have asked the Justice Department to release American environmental lawyer Steven Donziger, who spent decades battling Chevron Corp over pollution in the Ecuadorian rainforest.

The disbarred lawyer was handed a six-month imprisonment sentence in October for criminal contempt arising from a lawsuit brought by the oil company.

The Democrats including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib on Monday said in a letter addressed to Attorney General Merrick Garland that the lawyer was jailed for "petty contempt of court".

"As the United States is a party to the District Court case against Mr. Donziger, we request that you act immediately to reclaim control of this case, dismiss the charges, and free Mr. Donziger from his imprisonment," the letter said.

U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska sentenced Donziger after finding him guilty in May of "willfully" defying court orders, including by failing to turn over his computer and other devices.

"Petty contempt of court?"

How would The Squad feel about people willfully defying contempt of Congress charges?

This lawyer was found guilty of paying bribes to Ecuadorian officials to falsify testimony and deliver a guilty verdict. He then took that crooked verdict to American courts to try to enforce it against Big Oil.

Now, The Squad wants him freed from jail in their quest to further attack the energy producers in America.

Reminds me of a story told by Paul Harvey.
This lady had a bumper crop in her vegetable garden and decided to share the bounty with the neighborhood. She set a table out front with a sign reading, "Free Zucchini."

An elderly neighbor happened by and raising his cane shouted, "Free Zucchini nuttin'. I say shoot da bum!"

Not only should he remain in jail for the rest of his term, he should be sent to complete it in the Uighur concentration camps in China since these Democrats love China so well.

They think that bribing judges and attorneys in order to convict an oil company is "petty contempt of court," even though that happened in Ecuador. Even CBS' Sixty Minutes did a documentary on the story, using the faked evidence concocted by Danziger as its source material.

Another "ends justify the means" group of people. And they are in OUR Congress and LAAP-dog media!

It was actually the Ecuadorian national oil company that polluted the land after Texaco cleaned it up and left.

that sounds similar to what they accuse Trump and his associates of doing. I guess she must be fine with Trump’s actions.

Steven Donziger should be held personally liable for every dime the oil companies had to pay to fight this insane lawsuit.

Considering the Ethics of the petitioners and the Lawyer, Justice would be served if the sentence was increased to Six Years.

The question that is never asked is......Is congress contemptable?

If so, is the charge of contempt of a contemptable congress justified and punishable?

He is not being jailed for bribing judges. He is being jailed for contempt of court. This is not rocket science but it’s also not nursery school, or for that matter, bartender’s school.

Contempt is imposed by the courts, one of three separate independent branches of government. Contempt is imposed for failing to comply with the COURT’s processes. COURTS have the power to enforce and control their own proceedings and the contempt power is part of that.

The DOJ is the executive. A different branch of government. By asking Garland, of the executive branch, to get Donzinger out of jail, they are asking the executive branch to unlawfully interfere with the separate and independent judicial branch, a constitutional violation.

Garland has no authority to do it that I can see.
