The Ukrainian soldier warns me to speak no louder than a whisper. The enemy lines are less than 50 meters away, he tells me, and my voice — if too loud — can easily carry across no man’s land and invite gunfire from the other side.
“We see each other, and we shoot at each other every day,” says the soldier, whose name is Mykhailo. “Everyone is afraid … we are afraid, and the Russians are afraid of us.”
We’re standing at one end of a ruined factory on the outskirts of the city of Avdiivka in Ukraine’s eastern war zone. Ukrainian soldiers seized the building in a bloody 2017 battle that involved close-quarters combat. On this day in October, the war-ravaged structure clearly evidences its violent history. The factory floor is a wasteland of blasted concrete and twisted metal. The inanimate detritus of urban combat covers the ground — shattered glass, crumbled concrete, bullet casings, shrapnel shards. There’s graffiti on the walls, including the words, spray-painted in English: “God bless us.”

There were some amazing videos on YouTube from the earlier part of the war around Donbass.
This is interesting! Thank you. :)
I’ve been reading Gilbert’s “The First World War - a complete history.” Of course I learned about these things in school, but even then I wasn’t paying much attention.
Reading accounts of trench warfare is enough to give one the fantods. I know lots of guys just went crazy and had to be sent home, just because of what they had seen.
Although I’m not 100% sure if I buy that the Ukrainians are all that heroic. They could have ousted some of their gangster elite before things got to this point. (Why didn’t they ask their friends 0bama and B1den for help, I wonder? Their “government” keeps gangstering away while any hope for survival of their economy or nation dribbles away.)
It’s worth remembering Black Rifle Coffee Co refused to sponsor the defense of Kyle Rittenhouse. Since that time numerous videos and news have strengthened the case of his defense.
I don’t have the source but I remember also seeing a video where one of their CEOs was fairly insulting to conservatives.
I’ll never buy a drop of their beverage.
You could say the same about the US. The oligarchic takeover is a problem in just about all formerly free countries right now.
You mean more or less the same as the GOP leadership that sounds conservative before the election and then votes with the Democrats and mocks the "Neanderthal right".
I don’t exclude the USA from that criticism. And we are looking at a possible future like theirs.
Unfortunately I have noticed that happening with a depressing number of them.
