After keeping Virginia schools closed for over a year and repeatedly moving the goal posts on reopening, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten successfully delivered the state to Republican Governor-elect Glenn Youngkin last week. Despite appearing at a final campaign rally for Democrat Terry McAuliffe, parents showed up to vote against her endorsement and anti-parent education policies.
Now, Weingarten is finally admitting it's time for a pandemic off ramp.
"It was clear that vaccines for teachers helped us reopen schools. Maybe it’s vaccines for kids helping us get to an off ramp for masks and getting to a new normal," Weingarten tweeted.
So, how did she get to this conclusion? By following the science? Hardly. As usual, she's following the politics.

A 52% to 48% win is not exactly a trouncing. The teacher’s union hacks must know that a substantial part of their 48% was padded and phony.

Yes. My school board in fairfax county said no matter what youngkin does to eradicate covid mandates- they will not comply. Yet up until this point they’ve said they e had no choice because of the current governors mandates. They are insane and evil. If a governor bans mandates, do the kids have to comply is my question. Or can they tell their teachers to pound sand and take it up with the governor?
For being a veteran, savvy, hack, McAuliffe ran an astonishingly bad campaign. If he needed a nail in his coffin, appearing with zero garter at the end was it
I personally think that working within the system is wasteful use of time and energy. If you can home school, or neighbor school, just do that.
The people in charge will do whatever they want, and they will repeat doing it wrong even after they KNOW it is wrong, because they know the next parent might fall for it.
I ran into this sort of buzz saw in totally unrelated property use issue. The approval authority told me they were going to reject my use, and why. I showed black letter simple state Supreme Court precedent to them, that they were acting outside the law, the reason they gave (private covenant) is for the court, not for them (they do public zoning). They don’t care, they say “no” for the same reason, anyway.
It’s a safe abuse of power because opposition is time consuming, emotionally consuming, and costly to be a consumer in the legal industry. Your opponent doesn’t have any of those investments. The outcome in any given case is a crap shoot, depends on the decider’s point of view, not on any “rule of law.” Rule of law admits any outcome at all - the only rule is “write it down.”
Figuring out who is superior between governor rule and school board rule is an interesting academic exercise. The answer is not easy. The legislature has plenty of power, but the governor’s role here may or may not reach to local school board -— and off to the “flip a coin” court with the issue. meanwhile the kids are ... wherever “the boss” (and if you let them, the school board will step in) says.

No, we’ve been down this road before. Any compliance will just lead to more demands. The only “off ramp” is mass non-compliance. If that doesn’t work, then we’ll have to proceed to less civil negotiations...

Well, the state government can overrule any local mandate on public health measures, that is for certain. It shouldn’t be coming from the governor though, it should be coming from the legislature. Using fake and dictatorial “emergency powers” doesn’t suddenly become okay when it is our side doing it.
We have always been a close 50/50 split on nearly every subject. It reminds me of the IQ tests. Fifty percent are above average and fifty percent are below.
Yes- it is interesting. I was thinking since schools are controlled by state board if the governor and chief health official declare state of emergency is over. My son is a senior so he’d like to just finish up. My daughter who is a sophomore will leave for home school if new governor can’t turn this around. We are also, I believe, going to succeed on recalling two school board members so maybe that will wake them up.
Agreed- but current legislature is solid rat in both house and senate. We will have the house but not the senate. I guess the current mandate is an unlawful abuse of power so the new governor can simply tear it up/ not create new mandates in that case?
There is usally a pretty clear chain of command in the state, and scope of authority for each layer in the public education system.
Even the teacher is king, but only for certain matters.
The close you get to your goal (you say your son is close to graduation), the more leverage your opponent has. It’s more difficult to throw it all away when you are >< this close.
The vax mandate thing is a weird matrix. Totally depends on where you live, and even within a state can depend on where you live. For workers, can totally depends on your employer. Neighbors held to opposite requirements.
Yes, if the mandate for the school vaccinations came from the old Governor, the new one could simply rescind it. However, I think the local schools can just pass their own mandate, since they already have the power to compel vaccinations for school attendance.
By any objective measure it was a huge electoral swing given that Biden won the state by almost double digits a year ago.
Those kinds of shifts are very rare in elections. Yes, I am also wondering how much the increased scrutiny on the usual precincts for fraud helped, but it was a big deal either way.
Keep in mind that the “GOP” had more poll watchers AND the MAGA movement like us who don’t trust the GOP were also present in large numbers as poll watchers.
