Gen. Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said China’s test of a hypersonic weapons system is “very concerning” — and “very close” to a Sputnik moment as Beijing rapidly expands its military capabilities.
As The Washington Post has reported, national security officials were alarmed by the suspected test in August of a nuclear-capable hypersonic vehicle that partially orbited the globe before hurtling toward Earth. As China is in the midst of a rapid expansion of its strategic and nuclear weapons systems, its demonstration of hypersonic and orbital capabilities — first reported by the Financial Times — was less noteworthy to analysts for the technology, which its military has been developing for years, than for the fact that Beijing decided to test it.
Milley, noting that the term “Sputnik moment” has been used in some news reports since the test, stopped just short of that assessment.
“I don’t know if it’s quite a Sputnik moment, but I think it’s very close to that,” Milley said in an interview for “The David Rubenstein Show: Peer-to-Peer Conversations.”

The Sputnik moment was about hype not national defense. We could have beaten the Reds by a year if von Braun had been listened to. Our ICBM program was well on the way to surpassing anything the Russkies had or could have.
This is far more dangerous than Sputnik. We are not close to producing their missile. Nor do we have a reliable method of defense. Massive nuclear retaliation is all we have as of now.

I agree this is some kind of sales pitch. No telling what the Chinese really did and no telling what sort of classified hypersonic stuff we have.

The USAF used scarce data on the Mig26 Foxbat to justify the amazingly expensive F-15. But the Foxbat could reach Mach3+ (ruining its engines in the process). The USAF claimed if it could do that speed it could also do everything including walk on water. In reality it was a crude airplane of limited capability. A purpose built interceptor for the B-70 which was never built.
If the Chinese did in fact do what they claim many heads should roll at DoD, CIA and NSA. None will. The Pentagon and White House are too corrupt

Well, since the ChinaJoe administration has been all in for China, why should Milley be concerned? His first priorities have been rooting out White Rage in the military and making sure that the remade Woke Military can fight US domestic Violent Extrematists. China is our bud.
