Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Monday signed a law that restricts transgender students from participating in school sports consistent with their gender identity.
Texas is the eighth state -- and the largest -- to pass legislation this year addressing transgender athletes' access to sports. South Dakota also enacted restrictions, but did so through executive order. Idaho passed similar legislation in 2020, but it has since been blocked in federal court.
The Texas law, known as HB25, passed in the state's third special session. It allows student-athletes to participate only in the interscholastic sports that correspond with the sex listed on their "official birth certificate," which is defined as the document issued "at or near the time of the student's birth."
A student-assigned female at birth may participate in boys' sports only if a corresponding girls' sport is not available, such as football and baseball.
Texas joins Alabama in affecting not just transgender girls' ability to participate in girls' sports, but also transgender boys' ability to participate in boys' sports.
"My heart is breaking all over again for our communities in Texas who have been tirelessly and fiercely fighting anti-transgender legislation session after session," said Anne Lieberman, director of policy and programs at Athlete Ally. "HB25 is yet another callous example of lawmakers passing legislation that bullies and targets kids who just want to play sports with their friends."

The only problem is biological males competing in girls sports. Girls participate in boys sports all the time without issue. We had girls on my high school boys wrestling team 30 years ago without issue.
This case is more proof that whatever Dems touch turns to poop eventually.
How anyone can support a boy claiming to be a girl who joins the girls weight lifting team is beyond me.
How many trans sportscasters does ESPN have? Where’s the equity?

I had to read that a few times to make sure I understood what the author was trying to say. More and more it feels like headlines are being written who do not have English as their first language.
ESPN is using the official language of the totalitarian left: “student-assigned female at birth”. ESPN is OK with men playing on womens’ teams.
Nobody is stopping friends from playing sports together.
This law stops mostly men pretending to be women from playing in women's sports and cheating everybody.
What state is that?
There was one or two on other teams back in the 90s. A few boys refused to wrestle them and took the forfeit.
Other boys went out and pinned them in 5 seconds and were embarrassed.
