Vaccine Mandate Threatens Major Trucking Disruption, Industry Insiders Say

American truckers don’t like taking orders. But the Biden administration has increased pressure on some of them to take the vaccine—willing or unwilling.

All through the pandemic, truckers endured hardships to keep America’s infrastructure running. They waited in line for hours in sight of bathrooms they weren’t allowed to use. On the road, some died alone of COVID-19.

Now, with supply chains disrupted, Americans need them more than ever. But faced with the prospect of a mandated vaccination, many drivers are considering quitting.

“I’d fight it,” said veteran trucker Mike Widdins, referring to a vaccine mandate. “I think a lot of us will be quitting. Who likes to be forced to do stuff you don’t want to do?”

Widdins isn’t alone in his willingness to leave trucking if he’s required to vaccinate. Polls by trucking publications Commercial Carrier Journal and OverDrive indicate that up to 30 percent of truckers will seriously consider quitting if required to vaccinate. If they quit, the consequences for America may be massive. US Transport estimates that 70 percent of American freight goes by truck.

“It would hurt shipping big-time,” Widdins said.

Narrowing Lanes

President Joe Biden ordered his administration to mandate vaccines for private companies with over 100 employees. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) was charged with developing the rule, and the Office of Budget and Management is currently reviewing it. The review process can take as long as 90 days.

Most of the trucking industry consists of companies with fewer than 100 employees, though a significant portion would fall under the over-100-employee umbrella.

Most truck companies have six trucks or fewer, according to the American Trucking Associations.

Some experts say the selective reach of the mandate makes it ineffective.

A friend of mine is not hiring any unvaccinated drivers. The company he works for is paying up to $200K for experienced vaccinated drivers.

I’m a trucker. Pushing this vaccine mandate on drivers is an unnecessary, dangerous game to play with the economy.

I start and end each shift on my employer’s premises, which are under the control of their own adequate measures. Once per shift I stop at a truckstop for coffee and a sandwich to go. As public facilities these businesses operate under department of health mandates. I deliver at 1-3 of my employer’s locations per shift, with no proximity to the few employees working at those hours. When I load a backhaul to be brought back to our warehouse, I swing the doors, back on the dock, and wait in my tractor until the loading is complete. At some of them I drop an empty trailer and hook one that they have loaded.

When the big COVID-19 scare hit, most shippers adopted the plan to have outside truckers stay out of their buildings and either place the bills in the trailer after loading or email them to the office. The rest of the time I’m alone in my Freightliner, where I would be unable to exchange a virus with anyone if I wanted to. Anyone who knows a little about trucking knows that drivers lead an isolated existence at work. This is a low-risk population.

If you think that our economy is softening up now, wait until the federal government throttles the supply of competent truckers for no good reason. I supply grocery stores with food and other provisions. If my employer has to engage in a bidding war to man their fleet from a driver pool that’s 20% or even 10% smaller, it’s gonna be bad news for everyone who wants to keep eating.

Thank you for your real world explanation.

It’s obvious to me this was never about health and always about authoritarianism and total control. Everyone, regardless of their opinion on the vaxx, must fight this overbearing tyrannical cartel posing as an administration with an illegitimate resident who is fully clueless.
